Let me introduce you to the one and only amazing URBAN dance company......





URBAN are trained by two amazing teachers - Penny and Louise. They have some fabulous dancers and are of course very loud and completley MAD URBAN ROCKS YOUR SOCKS....





Now introducing one of URBANs amazing dancers (and one of its biggest nutters...)

Categories you dance in: U16 champ for solo and slow, U16 intermediate (with charlotte) for pairs.



What age were you when you started dancing? and how did you get into it?

I started ‘dancing’ when I was about 3 (ballet and tap), but the teacher was a grumpy sod , so I started disco at Bromsgrove school of Dance when I was 9.

My mom used to dance team (!), so through her really.



How much do you practice in an average week?

I have lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with comps on most Sundays. As well as classes, I have private lessons and attend gymnastics on Tues .


What are the best things about being part of your dance school:

As you know , everyone from Urban is SO supportive and very LOUD! We have so much fun at comps and classes, and I think everyone is so happy being part of our fabulous school . Penny and Louise are the most amazing teachers too... God, I could go on forever!



Describe your current costume and who made it:

All three of my suits are made by the fabulous Vicky Barkess

My solos is a gold leotard with pink and gold fringing.



My slow is basically blue and stones





Our pairs are black and green, with sequin fringing.




What is your favourite comp of all time and why?

Oooh I can’t pick LOL! Love love love Brean, Norway and Cayton lol – all have AMAZING atmospheres.




Which comp would you most like to go to? (That you haven’t been to before)

Would love to try Craig Tara or Killarney



Do you get nervous before a competition?

Yes after 5 ½ years I still do.


What is your greatest achievement in dance so far?

Probably winning U16 champ solo at International Dance Star Norway

What is your funniest moment?



hehehe...Jess trying to eat a young child at a comp


Who do you most look up to in dance?

Alenka Daniel from Urban is an amazing dancer and friend who always gives it her all

What is in your dance bag?

Oooh lots. The main things being my horn and tambourine to cheer everyone from Urban on

OK....so I keep seeing posts around here asking how to get a straight backcatch. So I thought I would post a final, definitive guide on how to get your perfect, straight backcatch...so here goes

To get a successful back catch you need exercises to progress as follows:

1. Do standard splits getting hips properly square, and hold the splits in total comfort (without difficulty).

2. Do slight over splits of 6 ins or 15cm until you can and hold the oversplit easily.

3. In the oversplits do backbends with head brushing your rear thigh.

4. On the floor in a chest stand, do overhead splits, the same position as a back catch but not standing.

5. Then you are ready to stand and do the back catch.

Jess you lie! The main reason you have a horn is to cheer me up with your incredible backwards talents Lmao. That day was probably the funniest day at a comp ever haha. We are loony
