QUARTZ HILL, Calif. – Don't mess with the marching band. That's what California authorities are saying after a 17-year-old girl used her marching band baton to beat back two would-be muggers.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Michael Rust says the Quartz Hill girl was walking to school April 24 when two men approached her from behind, tried to grab her coat and demanded money.
Instead, one got a punch in the nose and the other a kick to the groin. Rust says the girl then beat both of them with her band baton before she ran away.
The men had not been caught. But Rust says there's a clear message to take from the encounter:

Ha ha one of my students emailed me this article.
I thought it was pretty funny that she beat them w/ her baton.
I do always say it is a weapon...lol |

I don't think this is the same kind of baton we use- I think it is more like a mace. She is the drum major not a twirler.... |

And people say that football is a dangerous sport... And just think- we don't have any of the padding that they do. And I'm guessing that a baton hurts more than a football does! |

One of the news organizations actual prints headlines onto t-shirts. I have one twirling parent who was so humored by this article that she bought the shirt. Her daughter loves to wear it to class! |

I felt the safest walking on campus when I had my batons with me. If someone tried to mess with me at night...BAM! right in the head. Fortunately, I never had to do that.

That's great. I guess this is why we can't carry batons on airplanes. They truly can be used as weapons. lol. |
