Hey guys,
I have just been informed by my new S.O. that i will be hired as a subcontracted and will have to get sport/dance/fitness inserance. What is this and how do i go about doing and how much is it going to cost.
I have never had to do this before. I dont even have my own medical inserance as i am a college student and still on my parents.
I'm also pretty broke (college student) so is this going to cost me an arm and leg?
thanks.
i am clueless anything you know please share

Huh, really? I'm a studio owner and taught for other studios for 12 years. I was an employee for some, independent contractor for others. I never purchased my own liability insurance--I was always covered under the studio policy. If I hired teachers now, I would assume they are covered under the studio policy. Am I wrong?

I suggest posting this under "Ask a Studio Owner" and see what they all say.

SO here... As a subcontractor you are required to obtain your own liability/diability insurance. It is not specific to the art of dance/sports/fitness, just the rate varies based upon your job, also the amount of your annual payroll, so it's hard to say how much it will cost. Your employer is required to obtain a certificate from you, otherwise they can be sued. In my state (NY) my policy is through the New York State Insurance Fund. Any insurance agent can direct you to this.

On a side note, do a search on here to see if you feel it is fair for you to be hired as a subcontractor...

All of my staff and students, even substitute teachers, parents or anyone whom entered my building was covered. Ask them to check their policy, you should be covered.

You will be covered under their general insurance policy I'm sure, but not for workmans comp/disability which is what I think your employer is referring to. Double check!
