Modern or Contemporary? What Is The Difference?

I am so annoyed! I just failed a dance essay at school because I used both terms modern and contemporary but my teacher only wants one to be used. What is the difference and which one should i use?

Contemporary is excactly what the word means, present day innovative - dance.

Modern is what contemporary was in the past.
