 Twirling SYTYCD... Thomas Martin? en>fr fr>en By SesameSt79 Comments: 389, member since Thu Feb 06, 2003On Thu May 21, 2009 07:49 PM
Anyone see Thomas Martin's Bolero routine? He said he was a 6 time National twirling champ when he was younger. Anyone know where he's from? I'm guessing it was about 10 to 12 years ago.
Let's just say it was interesting.
But it does make me wonder why a twirler hasn't been able to crack SYTYCD yet.
I think I'm done with the random thoughts for the moment. 17 Replies to SYTYCD... Thomas Martin? |

I didn't get to see it but I've never heard of him before...
And maybe because it's a dance focused show and not a twirling show. Lol. |

Yes, but what is strut if not dance... and dance twirl?
What we really need is a SYTYCT (So You Think You Can Twirl) |

Yes! I know him, and anyone from New England who has been around longer than 10 years (or 15?) would too. He twirled NBTA. Both his mother and aunt taught and were judges. I ran into him swing dancing maybe 5 years ago. He was on his college team (for partner dancing). I wish I had known! I just did a quick search and saw on a blog that he and his partner were cut -- that right? (I don't follow the show) |

I totally saw that last night and was way confused.
I have never heard of him before in my twirling career. weird, and that dance was well to be nice it was not good...
I would think that if he was a twirler that he would have better movement then that, but thats just what I think. |

I'm from New England and have been around 15 years. I don't remember him at all. Maybe because I was a newbee 15 years ago and really didn't notice. Although I would think I would remember a male twirler. |

Oh boy- I know him....he and his sister twirled in Mass....
I wish I had watched it - could anyone tell me if he should of made it thru? My memories of him twirling are not those of someone with a lot of dance background.... |

He was definitely not good enough to make it through. Still nice to see a twirler on SYTYCD, though. |

There have been national champion twirlers (solo) who were not good strutters (couldn't stay in beat with the music). If someone can't find the beat, it's safe to say they aren't likely to be good dancers. So being good at twirling does not equate to being good at dancing. This is not a commentary on the twirler on show...I didn't see him - just commentary on the above comment. Also, different organizations put emphasis on different things, and over time, their focus may also change. It's nice to know that someone can succeed in baton twirling where they might not succeed at dancing! |

From what I can remember he won most of his national championships from military marching. I don't think he ever won a solo championship because he was twirling around the time of Bobby and Sean. |

If I remember correctly, he went by "TJ" Martin. If that is him, he is from Mass. |

Yes TJ is what he went by...and when he did win at AYOP I remember him being one fo the only boys in the division(when he was young)....the last time I remember seeing him twirl here (MA) was at least 8-10 yrs ago.
Pestojesto said it all.....I will say that what he was doing twirling level was not what we see from the guy twirlers now.
I think its great he went for it on SYTYCD - why not....I love watching that show when they are doing the auditions - one of the best parts is seeing all kinds try out. |

I remember TJ very well! He competed when both of my brothers competed. Good for him for showcasing his talent on SYTYCD. = ) |

I was wondering about his twirling past too. For those who didn't see him on SYTHCD, his dance audition was strange. He did ballroom dancing with a male partner. |

That wasn't him. He did a Bolero routine that was called "basic, beginner Bronze level," by Mary. However, it was with a female partner. |

ahhh Nystwiler just jogged my brain. Yes I do remember a male twirler who twirled during that time that would with Military March. Originally I was thinking he won solo. During that time, there was no male close to beating Bobby and Sean in Male Solo. |

OK so I missed the episode he was on and want to see it as I do remember him as well. Can anyone tell me where to find it online? |
