What do you want to specialise in? Some universities specialise in choreography, dance in community, or teaching. I couldn't say which is the best university for because I don't know which career path you want to take. |

LIPA is a university, they are having open days in a few weeks...if you're interested you should definately go and have a look around and see if it suits you. You'll need to book a place though, here's the information: www.lipa.ac.uk . . .
If you can't go then you might want to order the prospectus from them, it's free and really detailed.
Good luck! If you have any questions, feel free to ask |

I found this on the website:
"Our dance degree has up to 16 technique classes per week, in addition to classes in acting and singing technique, contextual studies and professional development. The majority of technique classes are held in appropriate dance studios in our Hope Street facility. For practical classes, assessment is through observation and class presentations. Feedback is provided in daily classes and after each term ends. Performance projects are choreographed by our staff and, in the later stages of the programme, by professionals currently working in the field. You will be required to write essays, reports, evaluations and critical reflections as well as a longer investigation in your last year."
So i suppose you have to! Your BA hons would be in Dance as a performing art, which includes acting. If you wanted to focus more on acting though you could do a BA hons in Acting as a performing art and you'd do a little bit of dance...i guess it depends on you though! |

Laines isn't a university, it's a vocational college. You can study musical theatre or dance there i think, here's the website: www.laine-theatre-arts.co.uk . . .
Graduates from there usually do very well, but from what i've know from friends and experience they're very fussy about weight and are quite judgemental about appearance, i'm sure lots of people would disagree with me about that though!
Where you go all depends about what kind of course you're looking for, what type of dance would you want to specialise in? is musical theatre for you? do you want a university degree or a foundation course? i'm willing to help you look for more schools if you give some more details!
hope i'm being helpful and not babbling on! |

If you want to dance professionally then you might want to look at dance colleges that also offer degree courses.
I think most of the uni courses offer either dance or drama, altho I know a few that do musical theatre but you don't get half as much dance as at a vocational college.
Most professional dance colleges offer a National Diploma in Dance or musical theatre eg Laine, Bird, Northern Ballet, SLP College, Masters, Hammond, Performers, Arts Ed, Urdang, Stella Mann to name a few.
But some offer a degree course as well eg Arts Ed, London Studios, Urdang, Bird. There are probably more that I don't know of! So if you are looking for a degree then google and send off for the prospectus.
I think the National Diplomas can be ''topped up'' by doing extra course work to bring it up to degree level.
Try looking at the Council for Dance Educations and Training website (CDET) or on thestage.co.uk
Hope this helps!

i definately agree with what Daisy said, to get a job as a professional you need as much practical education as possible and generally it is the vocational schools that offer that.
The CDET website is really useful, particularly this page: www.cdet.org.uk . . . it lists lots of different courses and basic details of them. I think it'd be handy for you to have a look at each of the schools on the and maybe start making a list of places that interest you, which you could then do some more research on because once you get to the interview stage on an interview they'll expect you to have some knowledge about the school. Also you might want to start thinking about how you're going to fund your course once you find one, there are lots of ways but training can be really expensive so you really need to be sure on whether a course is for you or not!
Hope things are going well! |
