Competitor profiles and performance order for day 1,2 and 3 - Round I

Round I: 2.6. - 4.6. at 7 pm (three performances)
Juniors present two variations from the classical 19th century ballet repertoire and seniors can choose either pas de deux or two variations. Part of the competitors will be eliminated, and the semi-finalists will proceed to round II.

At the Helsinki International Ballet Competition 13 junior and 30 senior dancers out of 70 have qualified to the semifinals. In the First Round the competitors performed two classical variations or one pas de deux. The competitors chosen by the international jury will perform modern programme in the Second Round.

The semifinals of the Helsinki International Ballet Competition will be seen on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7. The competitors will perform contemporary ballet fragments lasting from 3 to 6 minutes. At the semifinals the jury will pay a special attention to the competitors' ability to express modern choreography.

Helsinki International Ballet Festival ends with a Gala Performance on Thursday, June 11 with a Guest Star on international level. The worldfamous principal dancer Denis Matvienko, born 1979 in Ukraine, will be performing with the winners in the Gala.
He has been the principal dancer at the National Ballet of Ukraine in Kiev 1997-2001 and 2003-2007. He has been at Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg 2001-2003. Since 2007 Matvienko has been the principal dancer at Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Denis Matvienko has earlier visited also at Savcor Ballet Festivals in Mikkeli.

In the Gala Denis Matvienko will perform with Salla Eerola, a ballerina at the Finnish National Ballet. They'll dance pas de deux, Le Corsaire. Salla Eerola, who has been with the Finnish National Ballet since 1996, is well known for many leading roles in classical ballet and contemporary dance. She was a finalist in Helsinki International Ballet Competition in junior category 1995.

We will see in the Gala also another Top Pair, Yao Wei and Marcin Kupinski from the Royal Ballet of Denmark. China born Yao Wei has been with the Danish Ballet since 2002 and a premier dancer since 2008. She has won the Grand Prix Award at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 2001. Polish born Marcin Kupinski has been with the Royal Ballet of Denmark since 2002. He has been awarded at the Varna International Ballet Competition in 2002 and and at the Eurovision Young Dancers' competition in 2001.

Helsinki International Ballet Competition is heading towards semifinals and 43 dancers have qualified to the Second Round. The semifanals will take place on Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7 at the Almi Hall Foyer, Finnish National Opera.

The Finals of the sixth Helsinki International Ballet Competition will be seen on Tuesday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 10 at the Finnish National Opera. After the Second Round, where Competitors performed contemporary dance works, 29 Competitors – 8 juniors and 21 seniors – out of 43 semifinalists have qualified to the last Round. In the Second Round juniors, aged 15-18 years and seniors from 19 to 25 years, performed fragments of contemporary dance works. The competitors had chosen numbers both from neoclassical and pure modern works. Two Finnish choreogaphers, Jorma Elo's two works and Marianne Rouhiainen's one work were seen on stage. The Finalists will perform both a classical and modern number in the same evening. One of the numbers must be a pas de deux or two classical variations from 19th or 20th century's classical ballet repertoire. The Performances may not last more than 10 minutes. The Contemporary Ballet Fragment must be created after 2000 and may not exceed 6 minutes. The Competitors must not have performed these numbers during previous Rounds. Half of the Finalists will perform on Tuesday, June 9 and the other half on Wednesday, June 10. The international Jury will choose the Prize Winners of Helsinki International Competition 2009 on the basis of the Finals. The Names of the Winners will be released on Thursday, June 11. The Competitors try to reach the Gloria Grand Prix of 12.000 euros. There are 50.000 euro to be awarded to the three best Competitors in each Division, both junior girls and boys and senior ladies and men. The first three Prize Winners also get a bronze miniature statue by Sculptor, Professor Laila Pullinen. Furthermore the Pessi & Illusia Prize by Professor Doris Laine-Almi and Professor Heikki Värtsi is worth 3.000 euros. Even other Prizes can be awarded, if the Jury so decides. After over a weeks excitement the Helsinki International Ballet Competition 2009 comes to an end at a Gala performance on Thursday night June 10, with the Prize Winners and Star Guests. Premier Dancer Denis Matvienko, Yao Wei and her Polish born Partner Marcin Kupinski as well as Salla Eerola from Finland will be performing. China born Yao Wei was the Grand Prix Winner - at that time a junior - in Helsinki 2001. She now is a Principal Ballerina at the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen. Marcin Kupinski is the Winner of Varna International Ballet Competition 2002 and a Principal Dancer at the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen.Salla Eerola who performs a pas de deux of Le Corsaire with Denis Matvienko at the Gala has been with the Finnish National Ballet since 1996. She is well known for many principal roles of both classical and contemporary ballets. She was a Junior Finalist at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition 1995.

The sixth Helsinki International Ballet Competition came to an End late on Wednesday Night. The Climax of the Competition will be seen late on Thursday Night, when the Award Winners are perfoming and not knowing their placements until the last part of the Gala is over, the Award Ceremony is a Surprise to everyone.

The Gloria Grand Prix, 12 000 euros, was awarded to 21 year old Xiaoyu He, who was competing in senior division. He has graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy and is currently a Member of corps de ballet of the National Ballet of China. He convinced the jury with his wide Competence, special Talent and artistic Interpretation. He performed in all Rounds with his Partner Haijing Yao. In the first Round their classical Number was pas de deux from Flower Festival in Genzano, in the Second Round they performed a contemporay Choreography There... and in the Finals both a classical pas de deux from Ballet Flames of Paris and a modern Choreography 5 Minutes Rendez Vous.

The Chinese Dancers won the two first Placements of Senior Ladies Category. The First Prize was awarded to Haijing Jao and the second Prize went to Hong Yu Guo. Third was Magda Matejkova from Czech Republic.

In the Senior Men's Division the first Prize was given to a Chinese Dancer Jun Shuang Huang. The Jury decided to give two second Prizes in the Men's Division; they were Brooklyn Mack from USA for the second time in Helsinki and Avetik Karapetyan from Armenia. Maxime Quiroga was the third.

Maria Baranova, a Finnish Dancer, was the best in the 15-19 years old Junior Girls Division.
17-years old Maria Baranova is studying at the Helsinki Dance Institute and the Hamburg Ballet School. She was awarded the Encouragement Prize for a talented Finnish Dancer by the Union of Finnish Dance Artists. The second Prize in this Category was given to Camille Bracher from South-Africa. The third Prize was given to Meaghan Hinkis from USA.

Two best Dancers in the Junior Men's Division went to the American Dancers, the first Prize to Jeffrey A. Cirio and the second Prize to Lonnie Weeks. Two third Prizes were given to Junxiong Zhao from China and Gergely Leblanc from Hungary.

The Jury decided not to distribute the Choreography Award of 12 000 euros. Instead they gave two Prizes valued 2 250 euros. The Prizes went to Marco Goecke for his choreography Affi and David Jonathan for his choreography 303.

Pessi & Illusia Prize by Doris Laine-Almi and Heikki Värtsi was given to Hong Yu Guo, China and Wen Jun Zhang, China for their performance of the contemporary work Distance Between.
