Anyone want to venture a guess as to who might win Miss Majorette & Grand Nationals? How about the College events and Friday night twirl-offs?

Madison Long is now competing in the Juvenile Division, as a 7 year old.

Also, I heard that PJ is not doing the Collegiate Pageant this year, but I am not sure if it is accurate.

I am sorry - I know it is fun to speculate and to see if you were right in your early assessments; however, these competitors have not performed yet.....how can we make predictions?
As an NBTA Judge, I may be judging one or more of the pageant events, and it would be a discredit to every compeititor if they weren't allow there 2:30 to shine! THEN - the judging and predicitons can start.

Sorry for the rant - but my students do this to me every year...
"who do you think will win Miss Majorette?" and I always answer - "I don't know - they haven't performed yet...."

Thanks for your time

I recently taught at the Villanova Baton Camp this past weekend and was REALLLLLY impressed with JORDAN FOSTER. I think she is in Advanced 13-15. I think she is one to watch out for and I hope she does amazing at AYOP (well I hope everyone does great!). Sooo I after seeing how hard she worked, I am hoping to see Jordan Foster's name in the top at AYOP.

I agree with plrj. You never know who will win any division until each contestant has performed. And even after that it is up in the air. It also depends on who the judges are.. and what style they like. All I know is that with the caliber of twirlers there are, it will be a great competition.

Well I understand and respect plrj's comments, I do have disagree. Baton twirling is a sport. All other sports predict winners for big events, for example the World Series. Just look at Las Vegas and all of the betting that takes place on any and all sports!

Predicting who you think may win, based on their performances throughout the year is nothing different than John Madden stating who he thinks will win the Super Bowl on Fox!

I agree with plrj that the girls have yet to compete, but for those of us who travel around the country to different competitions for 10 months out of the year and have been exposed to twirlers from all parts of the country, that is the fun part-prediciting who we think may win and seeing if we are right!

I can't wait to see if my predictions are correct...only I will know!

I respectfully am going to hold my position.
There is still an element of subjectivity in our 'sport', whereas in Football, the outcome is based on a final score between two teams in a more objective settng.

I can promise that MY judging will be based 100% on the performance in front of me.....not on what was done in the year leading up to it.

Regards.....
PLRJ

I am by no means suggesting that a twirler should win a title based on their reputation or previous accomplishments! Baton twirling is a subjective sport, just like figure skating and gymnastics. At the Olympics, there are "favorites" going into the games. Even though their are favorites, the gold is given to the athlete who performs the best at the games.

For those of you will be juding at AYOP, we would EXPECT you to judge based 100% on the performance in front of you.....not on what was done in the year leading up to it. That is what credible judges do and we would hope for nothing less!

I still do not believe there is any harm in making predictions for AYOP and I don't think that any posts on here would have any impact on the results...

Good luck to everyone who's competing!

I agree with PLRJ on this one. These prediction posts also bother me somewhat because we are, for the most part, dealing with kids and adolescents who are still developing physically, mentally, and emotionally. Let the kids twirl and let the judges decide. That's enough pressure for the kids without coming here to see their name listed (or not) as a "favorite."

PSU2, I noticed that you're keeping your predictions to yourself--that's interesting since you're playing devil's advocate to PLRJ.

I would have to side with PSU2. There is no harm in making predictions. Everyone does it...whether they admit it or not, starting with the state and regional pageants. Yes, we are dealing with kids, but any predictions made ANYWHERE should not affect the outcome.

In all different sports, kids are dealing with these kinds of pressures, from the traveling team vs. in house teams, and all star teams. That is part of being in a competitive sport and a life lesson.

The elite twilers are not going to let any posts on dance.net affect their performance or put more pressure on them. These are well trained athletes and they have the best coaches. If anything, they would use them as a motivating tool.

I've been watching Alyssa for some years, she is such an elegant twirler. I'd love to see her as Miss College Majorette. Isn't she the Feature Twirler for UConn?

This is an ongoing discussion I have had since the Big Show, last year, and will continue throughout AYOP this year. The predictions are continusously evolving based on each competition we attend and the different twirlers' perfomances.

I choose not to make predictions on a public forum, but rather in person, within the context of an on-going discussion with others and we can analyze, synthesis, and evaluate what judges are rewarding, giving credit for, etc.

If you don't think judges are not having this type of conversation amongst themselves, then look at all of the "networking" that is taking place on facebook.

However, if there are others in the dance.net forum who would like to venture a prediction, or two, I believe there is no harm. As we have all agreed upon: the judging should be based 100% on the performance in front of the judges.....not on what was done in the year leading up to it.

Another UConn Feature Twirler would also make a wonderful College MM too. Alyssa McLaughlin is a beautiful twirler. I think either Alyssa would have a great shot at being in the top of the college group. Good Luck to both of them!

PSU2,

Thanks for explaining your take on things! I agree that it's best to keep predictions silent/quiet. I just don't believe that public forums are the best place for them (and I know predictions happen among judges, coaches, parents, and twirlers themselves), but that's my opinion.

meljenni weren't you hired to teach at Villanova Camp, and isn't it run by the Gangi/Kane family? I find it interesting that the only 2 twirlers that you posted were both Gangi/Kane Twirlers, very disappointing. I've always thought much better of you than that. Twirling shouldn't be a name game! Let the twirlers do their thing and let the judges decide.

I 100% believe that the placements should be earned based on that twirling performance on not on anything else. I know that I saw some routines last year in finals by some really great twirlers who were not having a good day. That's definitely not to say that they weren't good performances, just that they weren't the best. But because these twirlers were normally good and had made a name for themselves, they still placed top 3 so they could go to Worlds. This is the sort of subjective judging that I hate. As long as the predictions have nothing to do with the outcome, then I don't think that predicting who will win is any harm. We all know that twirlers have good days and bad days. We will be able to form more accurate predictions after everyone has performed!

For those of you who know Jennifer Marcus, should would never play the name game. Jennifer has brought nothing but integrity to the twirling world. I believe she had the opportunity to spend time with these two young ladies this week and were impressed by their twirling abilities and wanted to give them their props...nothing more, nothing less.

Also, I believe Brittany Brown got married, so is she still eligible to compete in the MISS College Majorette?
