I have been teaching for several years now (anything form mom & me classes to Adv. ballet & variations), though, much of my teaching does not include hip-hop! I recently got a slight career change and I will be teaching dance (ballet, tap, jazz, modern and incorporating their reg. class lesson plans as well) to k-5th graders at a fine arts magnet elementary school-I am sooo excited/scared! lol The principal told me that some of the 4th and 5th graders have inquired about hip-hop--which I would love to do for them, but could use any help I can get in that area!! If you get a chance, would you mind sharing with me as well? I will put it to good use ;) I already sent you karma, even if you don't e-mail it to me, I think its awesome that you have shared with many of us thus far! Cheers to you!

Thank you!

Hey everbody, I got a copy too - and thanks so much, it's helpful. But perhaps all of you are looking for a codified system to quickly and easily teach Hip Hop for kids?

Well I found it while looking at the vendors at Rhee Gold's DanceLife Conference this week, and it's only about $60 - 100.
"Hip Hop in a Box" contains 100 steps on Flash Cards, all with cute names, and a visual diagram of the move. (You can even put the cards in sequence for a layout of an entire dance.) Go to danceinabox.com for more info. Basic Box is $60, and you can also buy 6 add-on canned routines on CD, using her steps.

Tricia Gomez is the author and she danced fro 28 years, including being a Laker Girl, and now owns HYPE Studios in CA.

Is there any way that you can send me a copy of your Hip Hop Cirriculum.

I teach 1/2 the class as warmup and stretches and the other 1/2 dancing.
I just want to be sure that I am making the most out of my time.

Thanks

Ok so there are tons of hip hop moves with names....for example all the "hood" or "ghetto" dances have names like the spongebob, the jerk, the stanky leg, the lean back, and the ricky bobby etc.. Also you have vocabulary for locking... such as a throwdown lock, wrist roll, single lock, double lock etc.. and for popping you have knee pops (back), knee bops (foreward), a pop, tick, strobe, vibrate, chest pop, neck pop, and you can pop in many different postiions. Theres also illusion styles such as waving where you have a wave (which comes in) and a reverse wave (which comes out from you shoulder) a body wave and reverse body wave. Gliding where you have knee glides, ski glides, foreward glides, backward glides( moon walk) side glides and box glides. Tutting where you have box tutts, finger tuts...etc house dance is apart of hip hop, whacking and of course breaking is a part of hip hop and the list goes on and on and on. There is terminology in hip hop you just have to go back to hip hops roots. All the old school moves are making a come back. Plus now you have hood dances too which my students loveeeee because the are fun and somewhat easy. I hope this helps. Also youtube is your friend if you need help learning any of this stuff they have tutorials on all this. Good luck

never said there weren't names, but there is not a set curriculum in place when it comes to hip hop. i'm quite familiar with all the terms you mentioned.

when you take ballet, you know you must learn plies before learning anything else. i was just trying to get a solid accurate curriculum. the problem with hip hop is, there are so many interpretations and variations. what is one thing to you may not be the same thing to me.

and those "hood" dances you referred to is exactly what i'm trying to get away from in my classes. my students in particluar, only want to do those dances and nothing else. i tell them to keep the dance craze outside the classroom.

i do utilize youtube from time to time. it can be very helpful. :)
