Well first off there are not many different variations of hip hop elements. There is a certain standard in teaching hip hop movement. i.e a pop is a contraction and a release of a muscle you can pop in different angles or positions but the point is that a pop is still a pop and before you try different positions you have to know how to pop first!!! Also if your trying to keep your students from incorporating hood dancing into class then your not really teaching them up to date hip hop because hip hop changes daily and those popping, locking and breaking elements were considered ghetto dances back in the day and so was the rogger rabbit and the running man. There is a foundation and a standard on teaching these movements and this is what makes it hip hop dancing honey... If you're not incorporating this, then your not a true hip hop teacher. I come from New York where hip hop came from. I have learned for the creators of hip hop such as crazy legs, Mr. Wiggles, and many more. I teach my students all forms of hip hop so they can become well rounded dancers. I think you should take classes outside you studio and learn from some of the professionals. |

I appreciate your response, but I don't think you know me well enough to comment on my training and dance background. For you to say I am not a true hip-hop teacher because I don't do idiotic dances like the "stanky leg" is very rude and offending. Just because you are from New York does not mean you know anymore than I do. You have no idea where I have studied or who I know.
If you had read my post you would have seen that I said that those "hood" dances are ALL my students WANT to do. I am teaching my students to open their minds to something more than the mainstream dance crazes that disappear after 3 months. If you choose to fill your classes with that, then more power to you. I choose not to. My students are very well rounded.
BTW, just because a dance step is done to a hip hop song does not constitute it as hip hop dance. But I'm sure you already knew that since you learned from the professionals.... |

Okay..not to sound like a total...inconsiderate woman =] here....but how dare you accuse someone of that? If you have truly trained with the professionals as you CLAIM, you would not have EVER allowed "hood dances" into your classroom. There is a HUGE difference between mainstream and truth, and I know for a fact, first-handedly, that not ONE of those professionals teach hood dances to their students. YOU, are the one who needs to take a step back and evaluate your teaching, before accusing ANYONE else of not being a true teacher. How dare you say that to someone?
Sorry but I take HUGE offense to people who accuse others of that.
*breathes*
Okay. Lol. Anyways...Sorry this has totally taken me FOREVER to respond to again. If I've missed getting you the e-mail after this post, please please please pm me so I can make sure I get it to you. =] I'm so glad this is helping so many people!! |

Is it just me or does Jerkin' just seem like "Riverdance" goes ghetto? Irish Step dancing in the 'hood...it even includes heel clicks/bells.
Like if Michael Flatley knocked up Missy Elliott, this dance would be what their children would do.
hehehe.
Sorry...I digress.
Tiff...I hope you where able to look at some of the youtube links I PM'd you of the teachers I take from. |

^^^ Good.
Those are all high profile Hip Hop instructors here in the LA/OC area. None of them ever bust out with Jerkin' in their routines. |

It's amazing how some of the most arrogant people are the most inexperienced. Plus the word is "from" not "for" just for a reference. But what do you accomplish by insulting another instructor? Nothing that shows your lack of professionalism, and I don't teach the Jerk, Stanky Leg or anything else like that. And I dare you to call me unprofessional and experienced. I dare you. This may be a great time to evaluate yourself as a person and professional! |

tappingangel could you please send me the curriculum also? I teach hip-hop to public school students who basically have no formal training at all and I really need some type of base to start with. I can do hip-hop just fine but I have a harder time teaching it.
And ms_tiffy you are so right about everything! I can't stand people that think that just because they are from New York they ARE hip-hop and know everything there is to know about it. I also teach hip-hop in a studio and when I'm doing choreography the FIRST thing they ask is "OOOHHH can we do the stanky leg/jerk/superman??" |
