I teach anywhere from 7-15 year olds. Across the floor, I do the basic straight kicks chaines and leaps but i want to do more, but what? HELP! lol 19 Replies to What do you do Across the Floor | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By zebraobsession Comments: 82, member since Fri Feb 13, 2009On Tue Aug 04, 2009 11:43 PM
It sounds really basic, but one of my favorite parts of jazz classes was doing just jazz walks across the room, walking paralell to the mirror (so you're walking to the side). It really helps bring some of the more timid girls out of their shell, you can work on performance attitude, and it was always just fun. Other than that, a good combo is the pirouette ladders. Here's an example of the RIGHT side:
Prep with the right leg out in a jazz line and arms in second.
Step with the right and cross front, step out with the left foot, then back onto your right (pretty much just a step ball change), then prep and hold. Repeat, but now after the prep do a single. Repeat, then a double. Repeat, then a triple. Next you do the left side! | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By majere Comments: 3480, member since Sat Sep 29, 2007On Fri Aug 07, 2009 09:14 PM
Different types of leaps and turns. It sounds like you only do chaines and some sort of leap (saut de chat or grand jete - I don't know which you are talking about). You didn't say what level these kids are -age does not equal ability.
Pique turns
The six step which I think is what zebra described (cross ball-change, cross step prepare) | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By dncrgirl825 Comments: 241, member since Fri Jan 02, 2009On Mon Aug 10, 2009 07:51 PM
like zebra said we do walks- we do them with shoulder rolls, different arms, and things like take seven steps and take a pose on count 8. We also do pirouttes, like tombe pa de borre end in 4th piroutte or chasse chasse chaine chaine piroutte.
i cant remember anything else but if i do ill edit my post! | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By luvxx2xxdance Comments: 1174, member since Thu Mar 05, 2009On Tue Aug 11, 2009 12:25 AM
Ummm... this is just an idea
Usually we'll start with some random combo across the floor the get things started.
Then we'll do some chaine combo, then do 6-step pirouettes doing no more than doubles
Then we'll do some simple things like arabesque sautes switching legs, grande jetes, glissades.
This is from my old studio, that was my first jazz class of the week which is supposed to be a simpler class so we don't forget the basics, then on the second jazz class of the week we do more advanced stuff!! =] | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By britneydiva30 Comments: 5, member since Tue Jun 20, 2006On Sat Oct 10, 2009 12:45 AM
Well my jazz class is pretty intense, but maybe it's just cause I'm weak haha. It's like this:
1. Chaines at a pretty fast speed.
2. Double pirouettes with an 8 step prep
3. Triple pirouettes with a 3 step prep
4. Pique Turns
5. This is kinda hard to explain. You do a high chaine then a low chaine like in plie, then when you come around in your plie chaine, you fan kick. High chaine, low chaine, fan kick. and you rise up on demi.
6. Then we do some kind of leap marathon. We can't stop.
On the right, run leap, step leap, second leaps, run leaps, then step leaps. then again, on the left. They probably should be breathing pretty hard.
7. We'll do like fun tricks afterward.
8. We do frog jumps, they help the leg muscles and it helps you in your leaps | re: What do you do Across the Floor (karma: 4)

There's usually some kind of kick combo in there too. And sometimes pas de bourrees and possibly a layout thingy (no, that's not a technical term).
I remember taking a new jazz class... my teacher was telling us to "prance" across the floor. So he demos this prancing, and it looks a lot like something you'd see on America's Next Top Model - definitely not my forte. So I'm trying to sashay (no, not chasse) like the gayest gay that ever gayed across the floor (If anyone is offended by that, too bad. I don't know how else to describe it.), and apparently, I'm not so good at the prancing. Because my teacher is screaming at me, "Prance! Prance Miss Thing! I know you can do it. Prance dammit!" Which is of course making me bust out laughing - which is making him mad - which is making him yell louder "PRANCE MISS THING!" - which is making me crack up even more. You know what? I still don't know how to prance. *shrug* | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By staygold123 Comments: 474, member since Sat Jun 28, 2008On Sat Oct 10, 2009 07:57 PM

I taught younger students for the most part so this may not be applicable to all of your classes
Kicks-you can either do them separately or put them in a combo. We always did for instance step right, left leg kicks front and comes down, then right leg kicks to the side(body will turn to face the mirror) and come down(body will turn to face opposite of original direction) and then left leg kicks back then in to a step ball change to turn back facing front. Sorry if that makes no sense.
I also do chasses, pas de bourres(and pas de bourres turns), step ball change, pivot turns...simple things like these. I will also put those in to combinations(sometimes again as simple as step ball change x 2 then pivot turn x2.
Chaine turns both directions at various tempos. You can also do pique turns and make pirouette combinations.
I always included at least one combination with a floor slide, just for purposes of the level change and transition.
I know these suggestions are simple, but hopefully they can give you a basis to go on. Let me know if you need more ideas, you can feel free to PM me. | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By BgirlDoesBallet Comments: 598, member since Sun May 31, 2009On Wed Oct 14, 2009 03:18 PM
At my old studio I took a class that had an age range of about 10-16 and a really wide range of abilities. We did battements (straight, straight, side, back), leaps, tour jetes, and pieces of our recital dance that were modified to make them travel across the floor.
Another class I took there was mostly high school aged kids (some a little younger), once again with a wide range of abilities. We would do the same battement combo, chasse/leap combos (usually just chasse, chasse, leap), pas de bourrees, and pas de bourree/pirouette combos (pas de bourree, pas de bourree, pirouette).
At my new studio, the class I take has an age range of 10-16 or so but they're primarily beginners. We do pas de bourrees, pas de bourree turns, jazz walks with pivot turns (walk, walk, walk, walk, pivot turn, pivot turn), chasses, step ball changes, kick ball changes with pirouettes (walk, walk, walk, walk, kick, ball change, pirouette), and pieces from our recital routine that have been modified to travel across the floor.
I know we did more in all three of the classes but I'm drawing a blank... | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By manda7dancer Comments: 7, member since Fri Oct 16, 2009On Sat Oct 17, 2009 10:33 PM

The posters above have mentioned a lot of things that I do in class, but here's a fun and unique one. We full out sprint from one corner of the room to the other, and when we reach a certain point (usually marked by a water bottle placed on the floor) we have to jump. No slowing down before the jump, no slow extended run, just a sprint to any jump of your choice. This develops major body control. | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By alicelovestodace Comments: 959, member since Wed Nov 12, 2008On Sun Nov 15, 2009 01:38 PM

I just started taking an intermediate/advanced jazz class again and we did some fun combinations across the floor... Don't know if this would be appropriate for your class, but this is one I liked:
Chaine and "plie-chaine" before each of the following: single stag jump, double stag jump, grand jete, saut de chat; then, pas de bourre into pirouette preparation, do four fouettes, axel jump, continue fouettes and end with a double pirouette finishing in a side tilt. Whenever someone pulled off the axel jump within the fouette turns, the rest of the class applauded. It was challenging and fun! | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By Attitude1407 Comments: 1229, member since Sun Oct 07, 2007On Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:30 AM

I just taught a 10-year old jazz class today. After their barre work they did:
four walks across the floor (1-4), lift the leg to arabesque with arms in second(5-8), pivot 1/4 turn and catch leg in second (1-4), pivot back to face front with leg in arabesque (5-8). repeat across the floor. They do this three times on each leg
two walks (L,R) kick step (1-4), double pirouette (5-6), chasse (7-8). Three times on each leg
jumping chaine chasse (1-4), double pirouette (5-6), side straddle split to the floor (7-8), roll over and stand (1-4), four walks across floor (5-8)
Then they did free jumping from the corners! | re: What do you do Across the Floor en>fr fr>en By danceaholic_xoxo Comments: 501, member since Tue Dec 23, 2008On Sun Dec 13, 2009 06:42 PM

In the last few weeks before the Christmas break my jazz teacher was concentrating on changes in direction and focus, both across the floor and in combinations. For example, she might give us a few steps traveling diagonally toward the right-hand corner, then a 3/4 outside turn (or 1 and 3/4 for more advanced students) followed by a few steps traveling diagonally toward the left-hand corner, then a 3/4 outside turn on the other foot to head us again to the right-hand corner, then a few steps followed by a 1/2 turn sending the sequence to the back, briefly, then... well, you get the picture. Boy, was this hard! Across the floor I am too used to just focusing on one point and heading toward it, toward it, toward it -- regardless of the various steps used. | ReplySendWatch
