I am thinking of using "The Garden" for a senior jazz/contemporary piece this year, but I am afraid of it being over used. I though maybe if I took a poll on here, I could find out how popular the song really is. Even if you are not using it, maybe if you could let me know how many times you have heard it at competitions. Thanks.

I love this piece of music, but I am not using it yet. I remember the choreography from last years SYTYCD (think it should have been nominated for an emmy.

I don't remember hearing it at any competitions this year - which is kind of surprising since it was on SYTYCD the previous summer! Mercy was a different story though...

I can't remember what the song is, (I'd have to listen to it to spark my memory) but I have seen this song pop up a lot on these threads as song recommendations.

So, it must be fresh in a lot of people's minds.

Not I. Still too popular from SYTYCD. And I saw a girl do a solo to it this past year and basically did the choregraphy from SYTYCD. Kind of dis-tasteful if you ask me.

But no, I think it's too popular, at least in our area.

I'm from NJ and heard it EVERYWHERE this year! Great song though!

I agree with many of the other posters-- it's a cool song, but I won't be using it due to it's over-popularity. Last year I heard it 3 times at one competition! ALL were female/female duets and ALL had a very simple costume with fake flowers attached to it. 2 of the 3 dances even had to dance back to back!!

I think if you are going to do it, you might have more success if you do something DIFFERENT. Like a group dance or a costume that does not include garden items!!

I actually really like Mirah's "Don't Die On Me" better just because here "The Garden" is way overused.

Another teacher in the studio I teach at used it last year, but I didn't hear it at any other competitions.

i guess it depends on what your going to do with it too. I did not use the same idea/concept as SYTYCD at all and it was really popular (as in overalls and choreography awards at 4 out of 5 comps.)

If you are using the same concept, then no, don't do it

This song is WAY overdone in Ontario (Canada). It may not be where you are but I think that this song (and When I Grow Up... shudder) were way overused this year. I wouldn't touch the song!

I am from NY and traveled all over for comps and I heard that song several times during each comp. Don't get me wrong its a great piece of music but right now its over done.
Its up to you though....if you choreograph it a different way than on SYTYCD it could be a hit. Unfortunately all the choreography has been similiar and nothing compares to the original.

Mirah is a great artist, and her songs all have interesting musicality. I'd suggest looking in something else that she has done.

I saw it several times this past year at competitions. One of which was a solo that scored well but lower than I thought she deserved - I'm guessing that the song choice/theme was a factor.

We did it last year, and I was surprised that no one else used the song. Didn't see any one else do it except for one other studio & they did a jazz piece to it almost kick precision type. Ours was jazz-contemporary & just plain weird. So way different. Use it if you want it won't be too popular. This year I'm using Bamboo Banga, for my senior company contemporary jazz, I'm so excited!!!

Please don't do it. Our studio competed against a group doing that song at every SINGLE competition. And if you do choose to use it, be original. One group we competed against used some of the same moves from sytycd, as well as a VERY similar costume

With all of the millions and billions of GREAT songs out there, why would you want to use something that you already know is probably going to be overused since it was used on that show? Be original!
