 Teachers - General Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By Dancebear8504 Comments: 255, member since Fri Jul 07, 2006On Sat Sep 05, 2009 03:39 PM
So, I am the new dance coach of a local dance team (YAY!) and I took over basically the week school started and nothing had been ordered for the girls yet. I have 2 (true) XXL girls on the team and I'm in need of finding the entire squad a cute, cheap top for them to wear at fb and bb games this season. I was thinking of Weissmans top....
www.designsfordance.com . . .
with the gold tank underneath.. and having the girls simply wear a black spaghetti tank leo underneath. I'm just afraid of these 2 XXL girls not getting enough support.. so....
1) Do you think this would work?
2) Any other tops you've seen out there? Their school colors are Burgundy and Gold, and they will wear black jazz pants of course. Let me know!!!
Our team is going to mostly perform hip hop and pom, from what I've seen of their dance skills so far their jazz and actual technique is pretty weak. I'm trying to stick with a gold top of some sort b/c all of the girls are african american and I'm not sure if the burgundy would really pop on their skin. Let me know, thanks!! 13 Replies to Sticky 'costuming' situation... | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By Sumayah Comments: 3571, member since Wed Nov 12, 2008On Sat Sep 05, 2009 04:47 PM
I agree, the burgundy probably won't have that some sort of pop the gold will against their skin. However you could always accent the costume with burgundy. Concerning support, they can always wear a thin strap bra under the camisole - between the leotard, cami and the half top, they're going to have to pin their straps anyway, what's one more? I'd be more concerned about the silhouette of the dancers. XXL doesn't always means really fat, however if they have any rolls or lumps, you might consider a different shape top, just to be more conscientious of their lines. | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By dancequalslife Comments: 171, member since Thu Jul 24, 2008On Sat Sep 05, 2009 04:59 PM
Did you ever consider basketball jerseys in your school colors with Dance Team where the nsmes usually are? We did this for a year on my college dance team which really helped out the bigger girls because they could where whatever support they needed. | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By kcampb7 Comments: 49, member since Sat Jun 20, 2009On Sat Sep 05, 2009 05:30 PM
I agree on the football jersey idea. I think that gold top might make the bigger girls look really round in the stomach area. What about light-weight hoodies zipped up half-way in a burgundy w/gold accents - then they could wear a gold cami underneath with their sports bras. Good luck! | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By CoachT Comments: 2436, member since Mon Apr 19, 2004On Sat Sep 05, 2009 05:47 PM
Are you limited to just Weissmans?
I wouldn't personally put anyone who is an XL or XXL in that top, because I'd get parents ready to kill me.
I have ALL shapes and sizes and trying to find something that flatters everyone is hard at times.
Here are some ideas
www.discountdance.com . . .
www.onlinedancewear.com . . .
Also is you have the option of ordering from the other weissmans catalogs - there are some really cute tops.
good luck | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By Dream_chaser Comments: 20912, member since Thu Jul 26, 2001On Sat Sep 05, 2009 06:05 PM
That top is too snug for that size. I like the jersey idea, if possible. We did that with our school dance team and it looked just fine. | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By liv2dnz Comments: 325, member since Tue Jul 07, 2009On Sat Sep 05, 2009 08:22 PM
I agree with everyone about the gold, it only accentuates flaws. I don't even think small girls look small in that fabric. The idea of the jersey is great, a football one for fb games and a basketball one for bb games. If you want the gold leotard, they can wear it underneath so the color comes through. That leotard does allow for sports bras so the well endowed girls may wear a bra. Hope this helps... | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By Dancebear8504 Comments: 255, member since Fri Jul 07, 2006On Sat Sep 05, 2009 09:07 PM
Thank you everyone. You helped concrete my fear of putting the girls in that top... please keep any other suggestions open.. we are in a less than fortunate area, so I can't go to crazy at this time getting the girls anything too much.. but I do like the fb jersey idea, and I'm going to look into those costs.. and perhaps bust out the bedazzler!
keep the ideas/links coming!! thank you!! | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By snot85 Comments: 3474, member since Mon Jun 20, 2005On Sat Sep 05, 2009 09:43 PM
Have you looked at Liberts yet? ( www.liberts.com . . .) I love using them when I'm looking for just a top or just a skirt or some other accessory. Shipping's fast, costumes are pretty cheap, and they even have a closeout section. | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By tcsso Comments: 5416, member since Sun Feb 13, 2005On Sat Sep 05, 2009 09:55 PM

I don't know if you have access for someone to make your costumes, maybe a sewing class at the school? The fabric is rather inexpensive, if you get the mesh one. I have purchased that at walmart in the $1.00/yard pile, however color selection is limited. I wish you luck... | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By CoachT Comments: 2436, member since Mon Apr 19, 2004On Sun Sep 06, 2009 01:22 PM
Also check out your local sporting store.
I know when I was in HS we had a local shop that did all the school jackets, sweatshirts etc.
They might give you a good deal?
Also this site might have something in your budget and and you can always add stones too.

I second liberts.com could I also suggest www.weissmanscostumes.com . . . they have plus size costumes and are fairly affordable. You could also check out forever21.com they have a new plus size line and a lot of it is offered in the smaller sizes as well. You could probably do that at a Dots or Fashion Bug if you have any near you.
Could they even wear a regular school tee shirt? You could even bedazzle those or maybe do this: answers.yahoo.com . . .
Hope that helps! | re: Sticky 'costuming' situation... en>fr fr>en By Dancebear8504 Comments: 255, member since Fri Jul 07, 2006On Mon Sep 21, 2009 01:14 PM
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions... it got my creative juices flowing!! I think I've found a jazzy top for the girls to wear, and I'm thinking about having the girls wear basketball jerseys during bball season for a different style every once in a while! Thanks again! | ReplySendWatch
