I'm getting this ready for our competition groups. I'm sure not everything will match the way everyone does stuff, but thought it might be helpful to others. Feel free to add/edit stuff.
Performance Etiquette
Show respect and professionalism at all times.
Absolutely NO TALKING backstage. Please follow all directions given by teachers and backstage staff.
Arrive at the call time with hair and make-up already in place.
Be clear on the tights required for each dance and have back-ups/alternates just in case.
Be aware of the required hair style for each routine and have hair done before arriving at the venue.
Have all hair pieces for each costume and bobby-pins to secure them in place.
Have your “performance kit” stocked and packed for each and every performance.
Have all pieces of your costume together and labeled with your name on it in case anything is left behind.
Performance “Call Time”
The call time is when students should be backstage in costume with hair and make-up done. This is typically one hour before the scheduled performance time. (For CNDC we ask students to arrive ready one and a half hours early as it often runs ahead of schedule). This time is for the teachers to conduct a proper warm-up so dancers run a lower risk of injury on stage, are able to use their best technique throughout their routine and are mentally prepared. Students should not bring activities to “pass the time” such as books or video games as they should be spending the time concentrating on their upcoming performance(s). We also use this time to run through their routine once or twice before going on stage. If a dancer is late they are often not focused and also affect the warm-up routine of the other dancers. Often our only time to practice the routine is right at the call time since many other groups share the rehearsal space. It is very important that all dancers are there for the run-through.
Parent’s Responsibilities
Please drop off your child at the designated meeting place AT THE CALL TIME with hair (including any hair accessories) and make-up in place and with their costume on (or all pieces ready to quickly get dressed backstage).
Please allow the teacher to then take the students as a group to prepare for their performance.
We understand that unexpected delays sometimes occur. Should these happen please call (or text) the teacher or another parent to let them know that you are on your way and what time you will be arriving so that we can rest easier knowing you are on your way. Please have your child be as ready as possible when arriving at the performance venue so that there is as little stress on the dancer and the group as possible.
Performance Kit
Make Up for touch-ups (lip stick, mascara, eye shadow, foundation, blush)
Safety pins (small and big)
Brown bobby pins (to pin on hair pieces, hair bands, hats, loose hairs)
All tights (extras of the required tights and alternate colours in case we need to make a quick change)
Black bodysuit (just a good idea)
Beige bodysuit (intermediates and seniors)
Extra shoelaces for jazz/tap shoes
Sewing kit (needles, black and white thread, scissors)
Hair supplies for touch-ups (hair spray, gel, extra pins, hair nets, brown or black ponytail holders) 1 Replies to Wanted to Share My Performance Hand-Out for Students |

thank you for sharing the performance hand-out.
Do you want the dancers to wear a large cover-up over their costume? |
