Teachers - Music How to do Voice Overs (music/video example included) en>fr fr>en By dancinmyazoff Comments: 98, member since Tue Nov 16, 2004On Fri Sep 11, 2009 06:47 AM
I had an idea of doing some sort of voice overs for my lyrical class this year but am unsure how to execute it properly. I plan on having each student say either a word or a short sentence then mix it in with my music. The mixing part I'm very good at but I've never done any sort of voice overs. Does anybody know what sort of electronics I need or could use to accomplish this? I have a mic and a friend of mine has a karaoke machine that I could hook the mic up to but I'm not sure if that would be the clean and crisp sound I'm looking for. Anybody here with experience in this, I could use some help. Thank you.
Example of what I'm talking about is here in this routine, voice overs start at 0:37 seconds into the routine:

I believe many music editing programs can accommodate this.
I have a MacBook and use Garageband. You can record your voice in the podcast section and then layer it onto music any way you wish. I record opening announcements every year for my recital and layer it over music. My computer has an internal mic, so I do not need to add any equipment.
There are other ways as well, with other programs/computers. I'm sure you will get a variety of options listed. |

Our studio has done this every recital so far, and i always seem to be the voice.. hmm. Dependind on what music program you're using, it should work! We use Sony soundforge and went to best buy and bought a simple $10 microphone for computers and plugged it in to the computer. We didn't have to install anything new at all. Then we went into the program and there should be a function that says record and it usually connects itself. I like figuring these types of things out, let me know what you're using and I can try to help more! |

Is it a clean sound when you use the mic on the computer. That would probably be my best bet I think. I'm just worried there's going to be a lot of background noise/static-ish sound. Thank you. |

Honestly, it's always sounded clean for us. When I do the recording, there is NOTHING going on at the studio because the mic does pick up a lot of sound. I go in early before office hours and before any customer would be arriving. The owner and other teachers go to another room and have to be a little quieter than normal, but that's because sometimes you can hear their murmuring. As far as static, I've never experienced it. It always sounds clean and crisp and I sound like I'm everywhere when it plays in the auditorium. Just speak clearly and record it a few times! I think we bought a Logitech mic that sits pretty tall but it just plugs into the aux jack that looks like a mic on the computer! |
