I don't actually teach 5 year olds... but in my youngest class we are working on:
CENTER:
-conditioning of arms and abs
-stretching (of course)
-isolations - head, shoulders, ribs, hips - some of my students are also taking jazz (which helps) but the isolations can feel different and be used differently in hip hop
-body rolls, which is really part of isolating
-arm waves, " "
ACROSS THE FLOOR:
-freestyle walk TO THE BEST OF THE MUSIC (the hard part)
- step, step, step tog. step (yes, a chasse, but I explain why it should look and feel differently in hh class) with their own arms/upper bodies
-grapevine to the R, 3 step turn to the L (and then reverse)
-back gliding ("moonwalk")
CENTER:
-a short combination that works on a few elements of everything that day that will build as time goes on.
-freestyle circle at end
This is what I'm doing in class right now, the first couple months -- building their musicality and ability to isolate and put it all together!
I also go into top rock, etc. later in the year
Hope this helps! |

Thanks this does help im not used to teaching such a young kids hip hop class. I teach technical hip hop like popping, locking, breaking, illusion styles and so on. So for me to take a huge step back is going to be a challenge. If you have anymore ideas please keep them comming thanks soo much:) |
