Okay, so I just got kicked out of a dance because I couldn't attend a rehersal. A rehersal that was during scheduled class time and I had way too much homework to go to.

Background info :]

My studio wanted to put a new dance in the local festival. During our ballet class, my dance teacher choregraphed us a jazz dance for the festival. We had ballet from 7-8:15 and we worked on that dance all that time. When I left at 8:15 they continued the dance without me.
Then Thursday (she choreographed and taught us the dance that same tuesday) I had way too much homework to go to dance that night. We had scheduled classes of stretch and tone and lyrical. I got a text message at around 6, when my scheduled class time is 7. It asked when I was coming because they wanted to work on the dance. The girls that are normally in the lyrical and strech classes aren't in that dance. So I think she told them to go home? Anyway I texted her back saying that I couldn't come tonight because I had too much homework. Could we rehearse monday or tuesday instead? Then I recieved a text message back from the girl with words of what my dance teacher said and she's like "no it won't work, you either come tonight or you're out of the dance". I texted back saying that I had too much homework, it's not like I had some lame excuse as to why I couldn't come. School superceeds dance.
So I got kicked out of the dance. Then I find out that I was replaced with ANOTHER GIRL! They obviously couldn't go on with the choreography Thursday because they had to teach the new girl the dance, and she's a slow learner on top of that. So my question is why couldn't they just teach me the dance? I am an incredibly fast learner and the dance isn't overly advanced. They had to take time to teach the other girl. Who by the way is at least five years younger than they are. All of the girls in that dance are seniors (even me when I was in it). So my senior year I got kicked out of a dance to be replaced with an 8th grader. Do you make your students chose over school and dance? Should there even be a choice?

Thanks for reading!

There is always two sides to every story! This sounds like a one time dance for a Fall Festival. It will be over soon and therefor the teacher needed the bodies there. You did have a choice homework or dance...you chose homework...good choice by the way! She had to make a choice too...she chose to replace you for this one dance. Don't take it personally, she just needed the body for the formations!

I feel the situation needs to be addressed face to face and not in text messages. I know that may be the easiest form of contact but in this case, I feel it's wrong. Does school come before dance, yes always. Some teachers are very ignorant to this, and she should be able to deal with that. Especially if you don't miss classes, work hard and are in your senior year.

I would just take a breath, then address it after class soon. But don't let her make you feel like you should have made time to be there to learn a dance for a festival.

I agree that you should not take it personally, it was a onetime performance and she needed who was there. I also agree that it should not have been handeleds through texts, especially since she wasn't the one texting a third party was. I am also in favor of school first, however from your post I have no idea of your previous attendance and what not. To be honest, if your classes were three hours a day of course you would have to miss occasionally or be late to get homewirk done. But it seems like your classes are tues and thurs from 7-8:15. Perhaps your teacher feels that you could do better managing your time, if you miss for homework often. Since your class is only about an hour, what were you doing before seven about your homework? I would probably have replaced for this one routine also and gone with the people there that day.

I feel that schook should for sure come before dance, BUT really this is just a learning experience of what dance is like outside of high school...no choreographer is going to put your homework above the performance, it is up to the individual dancer to manage their time efficiently and make the choices needed if they want to be in a piece and be committed.
Honestly when I was in high school my mom would never let me miss rehearsal, if I didn't finish homework in time I would have to stay up late after rehearsal to finish it. It was a matter of what I wanted to do, if I wanted to dance, if I didn't want to be replaced I had to be there...schoolwork had to be done, but I had to manage my time and do it either all before or before and after. In highschool yes school is a huge part of your life, its your job as a student. But when you get out of high school your job, your dance instructor or company director is not going to care if you had too much homework, you will get replaced instead...its all about time management and focusing your energy on what you really want to get it done.
While I do believe your homework should have come first, I also think its not fair to your instructor for you to be mad that she replaced you. For her, the whole group is most important when it is a group performance, she has to do what is best for the group and if you are not at rehearsal, homework or not, its up to her to decide what the best sort of action will be for the group as a whole.
Side Note - I think its completly unprofessional that she would text you, for any reason, and think she should have called you to explain what was happening etc.

I understand why you were cut, and though it's unfair, that's how the dance world goes. Frankly, I have more of an issue that they're teaching a jazz dance during regularly scheduled technique classes. If this is a company dance then it needs to learned and staged on company time - not during ballet. I'm even fine with learning a company dance as a combo in jazz class and then staging it on company time, but I'd be more upset that the rehearsal is interfering with your technique classes. And if they canceled the regular class and had people go home... yeesh, they certainly don't have their priorities straight.
