O.K. I had a boy come to me who is in to theater and he has an audition coming up. He asked me to work with him on some stuff because he has bad coordination. He is in highschool and has never taken dance before. What are some things you suggest to work on for theater stuff? I have never been into theater just dance... He can't tell me what he wants to work on just stuff to help him in theater auditions. HELP!! 3 Replies to What to do? What to do? |

Find out what song he is using for his audition. Then see if you can find a version of it on Youtube to get a basic idea. They usually do simpler choreography as they know that most kids do not dance. Then give him some simple moves to match. |

If he's only taking class for the audition, then I would probably teach him some basic jazz (assuming that the show doesn't require additional styles). He should know jazz squares, lindy's, pivot turns, basic arm movements, ect.
Assuming that the audition will include dancing, he should learn how to learn a combination quickly and correctly.
If he is interested in doing theater seriously, then he should be taking jazz, ballet, tap, and possibly acro classes. Truly the more he is exposed to the better. |

Also... Box Step (or Jazz square. Which ever you prefer) step ball change, kick ball change. Perhaps even a time step. |
