Stomach muscles in pilates

Hi everyone,
I have recently started pilates classes (couple of months ago) with a fantastic teacher in only small groups of 3-5 and right now I am really finding how to relax my outer stomach muscles so I can start to use the deep lower muscles that dancers need. These muscles or really this feeling comes with the correct breathing and then makes legs much lighter to lift. It's all connecting. I know I do this in my classes and my teacher says this is the core to pilates and needs to be taught before anything else but I was wondering if other pilates students or teachers do this? Would love to see if there are different ways people teach and learn pilates. I right now am loving this way!

I think that's the basic principle of pilates. You'd get that in any pilates class, although I'm sure that having small class sizes and a good teacher have been a benefit to you.
