My daughter has become very frustrated because she has a hard time with turns to the right. She can do triples and sometimes quadruples to the left and fouette turns to the left much better than to the right. She knows the key points (I think...she does it fine to the left plus we have gotten some feedback), but for some reason it's a struggle to the right. Most of the other dance team members are more competent to the right. Most of the dances are choreographed to the right too.
Can anyone tell me why this might be occurring? Any tips I can give her? Thanks for any feedback. 3 Replies to HELP!! re: tech |

It`s the same as some people being right handed and some people being left handed. It is more common for most people to be right turners so the majority of the time turns are done to the right in choreo. I was and still am a left turner. We used to do turn combos on both sides and since most people struggled with the left I stood out and my dance teachers always thought I was a good turner. I always got put in the more difficult turning sections and had to learn how to turn really quickly on my right. To this day, my left turns are way stronger but I can get by on my right.
Tell your daughter not to get frustrated and to just keep working on her technique. It`s normal for one side to be stronger than the other, she`s just a little more unlucky because it happens to be the side most people are strong on. Keep working on the technique and apply everything done on the left to the right and it will come with time! |

I agree with everything Tapdanzer said. Everyone has a stronger side and she will just have to work harder on her right. Problem is, most people want to work more on the side they are better on!
If she is doing triples and quads then she definitely knows what she needs to do, what she needs to figure out is what she is doing wrong a fix it. It could be happening for many different reasons. Two major things that might be happening: 1. her spot on the right is not as strong or 2. her alignment is off. If your alignment is off just a bit in turns it can mean the difference between nailing two and nailing 10. Make sure she is not lifting her right hip. Make sure she has a straight bottom leg and that she is turning on her ball at the big toe and not toward the little toes.
This may or may not be the issue. It is just the most common problems I see. |

Thanks, I will tell her. I wish her better side could be recognized more, but the choreography stays to the right so those who don't get it simply are put in a different part. It'll come. She's a hard worker! Appreciate your tips. Thanks again~ |
