Belly Dance New Troupe member looking for NEW music for belly dance en>fr fr>en By starlet8310 Comments: 142, member since Wed Feb 27, 2002On Wed Oct 07, 2009 03:32 PM
Hello All,
Our Belly Dance troupe was closed to new members until recently. The troupe has been performing the same dances and numbers for the last several years, and recently decided to open up for new members and has invited us all to bring new music and ideas to the troupe.
So I am asking for all of your advise and input on NEW music that I can bring to troupe. They want to start doing dances to all music styles, even hip-hop if we can agree on a song.
Is there a song that is perfect for belly dance that you wouldn't mind sharing so I can take back to my troupe?
Thanks in advance! 6 Replies to New Troupe member looking for NEW music for belly dance |

It's hard to know what to suggest without knowing what style your troupe does and what music you personally like.
My own troupe have danced to everything from Egyptian pop to Beyonce to Shakira to Massive Attack to industrial. Right now we're working with a track from one of the Matrix movies. Heck, I even used a techno track from Eurovision a few years back for an audition!
If you want specific BD music, buy/borrow/download CDs and earmark the ones you think have potential. Go through all your 'regular' CDs and do likewise. If everyone in the troupe brings in a shortlist, then you can all decide together what to use next. |

Great ideas! Thanks for the help.
The troupe has primarily been more Cabaret and is going more into Tribal (one of our best troupe members just moved to the area and came from a more Tribal troupe) and so we are trying to incorporate that and do more of a Fusion of different styles.
So I appreciate your help and ideas!
Thanks, |

I love the Tribaret style of costuming, so you're heading in a good direction.
One of the first Tribal/fusion pieces I ever did was to a piece by Loreena McKennitt ("The Mystics Dream"? - not sure). Unfortunately I can't remember our others - they were given on mix CDs without covers.
I've been doing a bit more thinking, and one place I got a heap of music was a website called PayPlay.fm They have a whole section devoted to bellydance music, and you can either buy a song, album, or download select tracks for free.
Check out Solace's Moon Moth Mixes in particular - they're fantastic. |

If your still looking for music. My troupe has been doing Fusion Belly Dance for about 6 years (on top of our other years as cabaret dancers) I would recomend just finding music that MOVES you.
Industrial music is really nice because there are such heavy, driving beats in there that could be really good for tribal. Also - check out youtube, look at what a lot of the groups from CA are dancing to... there was a fad for a while of dancing to old fashion vaudaville songs, kinda circus like music, really neat stuff done to it.
Happy dancing! |

Ok, first of all let me ask you this, what are you fusing?? You can fuse all kinds of dance together. Do you know of Unmata? They fuse together Hip-Hop, Polynesian, & Belly Dance. How about Dusty, she fuses locking and gliding with BD. So again, that brings me back to my question... what are you fusing? I have a fusion group that fuses classical and contemporary styles with belly dance, such as ballet, jazz, and hip hop. That really helps in trying to find music that fits your group. But I do have some suggestions to at least give you a stepping off point.
Check out...
Beats Antique (created by Zoe Jakes and her boyfriend)
Pentaphobe
Electro Belly
Tarkan
Azam Ali
Bellyhouse
Jim Donovan
Knossos
Maduro
Tabla Beat Science
Sussan Deyhim
Despina Vandi
I could go on on for days... seriously. If I knew the style of your group that would help greatly, for good suggestions on popular music go to the teachers section and go to the music thread here on DDN, I get a lot of help there when I'm stuck. IF you ever need any help with music don't hesitate to ask. |
