I am surprised I have not seen more posts about Fame. I saw it a couple of weeks ago have to admit I was a little disappointed. Has anyone else seen it? What are your thoughts? 12 Replies to Has anyone seen Fame yet? |

I'm with you! I was terribly disappointed! I tried to go in with an open mind, knowing it would not amount to the original but I was sad that all but one original song was cut ("Fame" wasn't even in the movie, only the credits!)...The stories were rushed and the characters were underdeveloped. And of course the real reason to go see it, the dancing, was underused and not inspiring. Kherrington was good but I felt like the choreography did not do her justice. |

My best-friend-the-ballerina and I went to see it Friday. We actually really liked it although we agree that the choreography didn't showcase Kherrington to the best of her abilities and we would have liked a little more screen time for Debbie Allen.
That being said we thought the young black actor was fantastic and we loved the vocals from the lead black girl (don't know if she did her own singing but it was great)
Liked the story lines but they could have been longer. Overall it was a nice update of the original with the same basic feel so we liked it |

I saw Fame. I thought it was okay, not terrible or fantastic. I have not seen the original Fame so I did not have anything to compare it to. From what I understand that is probably a good thing. It was an enjoyable movie but not going on my favorite list. |

It was okay. I was disappointed. The show was too hodge podged. No storyline really. Didn't showcase enough dancing, very short movie. |

I went on Friday night and was soooo disappointed! One of my students had told me there was a lot of tap in it but besides the one cafeteria scene where the guy wore tap shoes and flipped over the tables, I didn't see any!
I'm a huge Bebe Neuwirth fan and was disappointed they didn't utilize her more. And I really didn't care about the dance program AT ALL. I had no sympathy for Kevin (I think his name was?) who was told from his audition he wasn't good enough and should go back to Iowa. There was no sense of really trying or struggling to make it with him (I even forgot he was in the movie!) so when Bebe told him he wasn't good enough senior year, I really didn't care. And Kherington was also under-utilized. They had that one scene with her and her parents at dinner that lasted 3 seconds and the rest were just dance sequences. Didn't get to know her character at all.
There were other holes in the storyline too that I won't even get started on. I found the ending number lack-luster and cheesey. What did the tribal dancing have to do with the overall theme of the routine? It just seemed thrown in there. I think I just had high expectations that weren't met I wish Debbie Allen did a better job with this one. |

I haven't yet, and I think I'll wait for the DVD. I was super excited about this at first, but I've heard most people have been disappointed. And if Debbie Allen truly doesn't have much screen time, that's a shame! |

I would have liked to have seen more about the school and progress of the students' talents. I certainly didn't feel like there was a ton of development. The main girl, the actress, was terrible. I kept wondering how she even made it into the school to begin with. I also agree that I didn't care about what happened with Kevin. I didn't even know who she was talking to at first because he was hardly in the movie. The dancing felt so chopped up, and I was very upset that the song FAME was not even played in the movie. What was that about? |

I waiting for the dvd.
I had a feeling that it wouldn't stand up to the original. The original was so relevant when it came out. The themes were cutting edge in the 80's...coming out of the closet, interracial relationships, teen pregnancy/abortion, sexual exploitation of young females at "screen testings", etc. It even wove in elements of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which was sensationally popular in the 80's.
It had a very dark underbelly, just like NYC did during that time frame. In the 80's, Time Square was littered with Triple X strip clubs, graffiti all over the subway trains and people dealing drugs in public view. It was a very gritty backdrop for a very gritty story...that just happened to include dance, drama and music.
Even the actors chosen in the original were a motley crew of kids. No one was exceptionally "hollywood-beautiful". This cast is very easy on the eyes.
There was much meat to the original. Not sure how a new one could stand up against it. I would imagine it would be too polished and "hollywood-y" without strong story lines to support it.
The original was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Original Screenplay. It won two Academies and two Golden Globes.
I was initially jacked by the trailer and then decided I'd wait it out and hear what the reviews were. So, DVD it is. |

I saw the original too, and expected this remake to be shallow. All movies now seem to be pumped up with visual effects, and no time for story lines. I really hate when they keep cutting up the dance scenes with MTV style editing, so you can't even follow the choreo. I'm guessing they do this because it's too much work to get everyone dancing well, so they zoom in, out, and upside down. Perhaps they think they can make the dance look exciting this way, but it's nerve-wracking for me.
I never intended to see the movie, and now I'm even debating if I'd buy it used for cheap, on Ebay, in a few years. |

I was quite dissapointed as everyone has said. the dancing, not so much. I guess I expected the same quality as the first one, more Debbie Allen and great dance sequences. What really tore me up was the lack of FAME song in the storyline. The characters were definitely underdeveloped. I do think tat this time the focused more on all performing arts more than just dance. This time around you see more of the actors'training and music training. I don't know, maybe I'm reaching here. I do agree with the consensus, this version of FAME does not match up to the original! |

I stayed away. I learned a long time ago that any dance movies made after Center Stage suck (including Center Stage). And remakes are almost always bad. So this movie had a lot going against it for me. |
