 Teachers - General More hair-up-properly dilemas.... en>fr fr>en By teacherpro Comments: 230, member since Fri Jan 09, 2004On Sat Oct 24, 2009 03:57 PM
I read a prior post with great interest about kids who continually come into class without proper hair. Good discussion..
I teach elementary and younger @ a mega-studio.
I simply asked for attention to stringy hanging hair on a student last year (the girl also chews her hair)-- the mother went ballistic on me, the SO, the registrar, wouldn't switch girl to another class/teacher, spent the rest of the year glaring at me through the window during every class.
She's back - now has the girl in two classes w/me.. every one else is able to follow the dress/hair code (beautifully, I might add!). I'm totally done with this student because of the wrath of the mother.
My point is that, even though the studio requires proper dress, shoes, hair, (student handbook, huge signs, pics, etc) trying to enforce can sometimes backfire and create quite a mess.
Anyone have similar experience but a better resolution?

I love deboulé / chaines. I just start teaching them (only fase 1 is usually enough) and when all the hair is in a girls face, I tell her that is why her turns are failing. To all girls with great buns I say their turns are wonderful (I don't care about how it really looks like, this is about buns, not about turns). |

Our studio lets kids do whatever they want re clothes. I do not think anyone over the age of 7 even owns a leotard! It drives me nuts when the kids come in wearing sweatshirts, jeans, chewing gum! I have become the "mean" teacher because I require them to dress like dancers in class. I am not allowed to have them sit out of class, however, I do not "help" them. They never get feedback from me if they come dressed to class not appropriate. I never even greet them. I always compliment when they dress correctly. At the start of each year, parents who have not had me before beg the SO not to put their kids in my class...because I am mean!! However by the middle of the year they start to see that the kids are improving, because of dress. They are finally able to see what theirbodies are doing and can correct technique! |
