How do you find performance opportunities? en>fr fr>en

We only have 6 girls right now on our performance company, so it wouldn't be much of a "show". I'm having trouble thinking of places they could perform and who I should be calling to try to set something up. Any ideas??

Malls and nursing homes are a great place to start. We've also been invited to basketball games by local schools and universities.

If you have a musical or light opera group near you they're always looking for dancers.

Non profit organizations that hold fundraising events are always looking for entertainment. I work for Heart and Stroke and we've had local dance studios perform numbers for the event.

Call festival organizers, the Chamber, music groups who know of events... start networking within the arts community in your area and tap into kids' activities. My kiddos perform at least twice a month and we're always turning stuff down. There's plenty out there - just keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks guys! I guess I'm just over-thinking it and worried that with only a handful of dancers it will be over in like 5 minutes. This is our first year doing this and already have lots of interest in auditions for next year. Just having trouble getting it off the ground :)

Thank you everyone for your input!!

Kris, I'm in the same boat. Just opened my school in June and have only 6 kids in the performance class this semester. We've performed at a breast cancer event which showcased several different styles of dance so it worked well for us only having 2 dances to perform. They just learned a 3rd, but it's not clean yet and will be a while before they can perform it. We'll be performing at a school festival this weekend with our 2 dances.

It's been very hard to figure out where to perform with only 2 dances to show off. It's literally over in 5 minutes. So I've had to turn down several opportunities this semester due to lack of length in performance. Many places want us to put in 30 minutes to an hour long. Not there....we have 2 2-minute-ish dances. Sorry!

Just keep looking for events that you can pop in and perform at until you grow. It sucks, but only time will help!

Call churches, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, any community groups, if you have any fairs, festivals, etc., in your town, call them, too. Also, check with local charities.

When I was in high school in my studio's company, we did lots of performances at nursing homes and elementary schools. For the schools, we would either put together a lecture-demonstration program or bring an abbreviated story ballet. Also local festivals. We were usually dancing right on the street for those, so we had to plan accordingly (no pointe shoes, no on-the-floor choreography for the jazz numbers, bring sunscreen), but they went over pretty well.

6 girls is enough to do a decent mixed repertoire show, especially if you do it in lecture-demo form where you give a brief talk in between about their training or about history or pointe shoes or do some Q&A while they throw on the next costume. And if you have a few who are strong enough to do solos, they can come on and perform while the rest change clothes. It's a little bit tight, but it can be done.
