It was interesting. I wonder if the Mom really went THAT far in gymnastics. I just got that from her look of fear when Domi came on stage, like she was worried that she wouldn't know who she was and call her bluff. I was heavy into gymnastics then and I don't remember any Rhondas at all from that time period.
It looked like some of her daughter's drops were due to the sun being in her eyes. I think the mom was quite crazy! |

I actually know the mom. She used to live up here. She isn't crazy. Remember what you see on TV is cut and edited for the "right" effect. I am NOT saying I agree with the way she handles her daughter or has spent 15 grand on costumes. However, she has always been very nice to us. My daughter used to compete against her daughter. My daughter has moved much further ahead then her daughter has. We see her every year at TM and she always has very nice things to say about my daughter. I personally have never heard her be nasty to her daughter. Be careful about what you say you never know who is listening!! I feel bad for her ...that she has a need to live through her daughter. That isn't good for anyone. I wasn't a twirler so don't feel that need (not saying all moms who were twirlers do)...but I see alot of it in "our" world! |

I assumed someone on here would know her! Its really good to get the unbiased unedited view b/c lets face it dr phil can be a touch dramatic! although you do raise an interesting point. It must be different for moms who were once twirlers to raise a twirler. There are so many lines that could be crossed so easily, I always wonder how I will avoid that If I ever get in that situation. |

I'm guessing the first step in avoiding the situation is allowing your children to decide on their own activities. Then, you could find another coach for them if they decide to twirl. I know of a few twirlers who are coached by their parents or relatives (excellent and superior twirlers even), so I am not saying it's wrong or that it never works but that I would never feel comfortable coaching my own kid(s). |

I'm looking forward to watching this show this afternoon when it airs here in California. Here's the schedule of when the show broadcasts today, depending on your area:

I haven't seen the show yet but back when I was in college there was a US gymnast by the name of Rhonda Swandt (something to that effect) who was way ahead of her time in gymnstics. So a Rhonda did exsist! |

It would have been nice if Dr. Phil could have shown the positive side to athletes who are given the opportunity to excel at their sport. Self confidence, focus, discipline... etc. Both sides to this equation should have been explored. Yes, I know there are the obsessed parents, but positive encouragement and being taught to work hard are not always a bad thing. Just so it doesn't lead to the 'Dark Side.' We have all seen that and not just in twirling. |

I liked that Dr. Phil treated baton as a sport
Our whole family watched and got a lot out of the episode. I have seen baton moms act the same way or worse through the years and the show was a good reality check for many including myself. |

I did not watch the show and have no idea who the person is or if it was edited for tv... but I remember my sister and I were interviewed for a show in the early 90s, "Amazing America" and they interviewed my mom who said "Everyone thinks baton moms are the absolute worst, but a lot of other sports have much worse." or something like that....AND all they put on the show was my mom saying "Baton moms are the absolute worst"!!!! She said she would never do another tv thing as long as she lived! Hahah... I love you mom....
My point is they totally edited her answer so I imagine they could have edited a little for the show also....
