This is what is on our syllabus for this exact age:
brush
stomp
stamp
ball change
flap
shuffle
shuffle hop step
shuffle ball change
flap ball change
pivot
walking flaps
single buffalo
toe heel turns
buffalo turns
cramp roll
If they master that then:
single time step
split riff |

It really depends. There is a big difference between a 9 year old and a 7 year old. My beginning 7 year olds master by the end of the year:
brush
scuff
touch
toe
(all the above include hops; i.e. brush hop, scuff hop)
shuffle
shuffle ball change
ball heel
flap
flap heel
chug
maybe flap ball change
BUT the 9 year olds add the following:
flap ball change
flap heel toe heel
flap heel toe hop
flap heel heel (alternating heels)
buffalo (single)
maxi fords
cincinnati
cramp rolls
paradiddles
4 count riffs
flap heel turns
and some begin pullbacks at that age |

You don't mention if these kids are first year or whether they have been dancing a while. I have 9 year olds doing some pretty amazing things because they have been dancing since they were 4. I also have some beginners who are 9. |
