Teachers - General Somedays I get tired of teaching beginners en>fr fr>en By cmdc Comments: 2194, member since Sat Jun 02, 2007On Fri Nov 13, 2009 10:39 AM
I've mainly taught beginners for the past 10 years. I also had the opportunity to teach students who were very advanced competing at the highest level.
Some days though, I just get tired of teaching beginners. I do enjoy it, but it does take the most energy (this is for any age group as well) and it is tiring to have to demonstrate and explain every single thing we do. It reminds me of when I taught Kindergarten in school. I envied the 5th grade teachers some days as they could say "work on your packet" and the kids did, you could sit for a minute. With Kinders you are up 100% of the time constantly watching/helping/whatever.
This week I just really can't wait for the day when I can say "Let's do this step" and my kids can do it without a thorough review, demo, explanation of EVERY THING we do in class.
Anyone else feel this way sometimes? And it's not that my kids aren't learning fast enough, or have trouble, it's just the level in general.
I think I'm feeling this way this week as my entire school are all beginners. I have no one that is intermediate or advanced as they've all never done this style of dance before. Slow and steady wins the race! 5 Replies to Somedays I get tired of teaching beginners |

Yes I have had this feeling many times before. It's the worst when you aren't feeling 100% and you just wish you could take it easy for a day. Last week I was feeling this way, I had 3 beginner classes and then one intermediate teen class. By the time I got to the teens I was beat, (I am fighting getting sick). I sat down after warm-up and was like ok lets see your holiday dance. I put on the music and they did 16 counts and then just stood there staring at each other! I could have screamed! I had to get up and basically re-teach them the entire dance, they could tell I wasn't happy. I had been looking forward to them all day and they didn't follow through! |

Yes, the beginners definitely require more of me as a teacher, but I'd rather invest it in them & enjoy the delight they express as they learn exciting new things than teach the advanced kids who think they've "arrived," & who wonder why they still have to practice grand jetes & pirouettes when they've been working on them since age 9....... |

I am so in the same boat! All of my current classes are kids 10 and under and mostly behinners. Some days I wish I was teaching something challenging so that I could feel like I was dancing! Instead of the same tendu/passe/tendu/1st position. And I would like to get through just one day with getting a blank look when I say 5-6-7-8 and begin!!!Hang in there, like everything in life it's cyclic. And though I would love advanced teens for the challenge I would hate the attitude and intolerable laziness! So it balances! |

I must be totally lucking out since my entire school is full of wonderful students and parents (except for 1 mom). Although I only have 5 teens out of everyone, not one of them has that snotty teen attitude. At all. They are all very serious about dance and love to come to class and WANT to work extremely hard, and they do. |

I love teaching the beginners ages 7 and up but find the Pre-Ballet level exhausting and I only take ages 4 and 5 for that level. I feel like I spend 5 minutes with every combination trying to get all of them to put their attention to the work. I really struggle with their wandering attention span. I really identify Val21Gal. Sometimes you just want to put the music on, sit down and be dazzled by the amazing strides they have made in their dance progress only to suffer the immediate ice water hose down by the "Nobody Home" look when they forget what you worked so hard to teach |
