Teachers - Job Talk Hip Hop Help... en>fr fr>en By dncr77 Comments: 40, member since Sun Oct 11, 2009On Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:49 PM
Fellow teachers and SO's I need some help. I am subbing a few hip hop classes this coming week and the following week and am stuck as to what to do with the kids. I can do a routine no prob but that doesn't take up a full hour.
The thing is they have classes right before it that warms them up so to do a warm up is kinda redundant and I do not know what to work on as far as progressions. Can anyone in the DDN community help me set up these classes so I make it through? They are Intermediate and Advanced levels. 6 Replies to Hip Hop Help... |

Still do about 5 minutes of stretching-after all the best time to increase your flexibility is stretching while you're warm! Then do some (15-20 mins)across the floor steps and maybe a combination or 2 that you plan to use in your routine. That takes up 20-25 minutes and now you have 1/2 hour to work on a routine, and 5 minutes of cool down. Good luck! |

So same structure as any other class. I guess my real question/stumpping point is what to actually do for progressions. I don't know what type of hip hop steps travel. If that makes any sense. Thanks for the help! |

How old are these kids?
I find that across the floors dont work with the older ones they only work for like less than 10 years old.
With older kids i like to work on isolations like the ribs etc to help them gain control over their bodies as well as i like them to freestyle because especially in hh it is very important for them to know how to freestyle. |

When I need to take up extra time in my hip hop classes I usually do what I call a "challenge" which is some kind of break dance step or freeze...even if its really hard itll take up time because they will want to get it! Across the floor is kind of impossible in hip hop bc they dont usually leap or turn. |

I do across the floors in my hip hop classes because there are so many formation changes in my hip hop choreo that traveling steps should be a focus. A good foundation is always a must, even the most advanced students benefit from repeating the basics, that is why every level of ballet still plies at the barre... |

I would do a good stretch then proceed to some across the floor and center work. In my classes my kids are on mats every week learning and working on new tricks.
The remaining part of the time we are working on combination's and choreography. |
