How much do they pay you?I'm teaching a hip hop class to 5 year olds and the owner pays me 6 euro per hour...I'm a begginer but I still...do you think it's wrong to feel underpaid?I'm also teachinga ballet class of pre schoolers, but I haven't been paid yet...do you think that I should settle down for whatever she decides to pay me?

I think you should discuss payment before agreeing to teach so there are no misunderstandings later. Just like any job, price is going to vary so much from location to location.. Im in the US and that is about $9. As a beginner I would take $9 per hour for sure - but I am in a very low cost of living area.

More than anything else it depends on where you are as to what you get paid, but you have to take into account experience and qualifications too. However I wouldn't be happy if an amount had been agreed and then wasn't paid, or if the payment was below minimum wage level.

jojospins is right, it needs to be discussed before you start the job really.

Payment really should have been discussed before you started but since it wasn't I recommend that you don't put it off any longer. Approach her and tell her you would like to clarify your payment rate for each class.

Jojospins-you must be in a very low cost of living area because I make $30-$35 (US) per class!

agree with ^^^ should have been established before but for reference here is what we pay by type of class taught (in a large US city) -

- Professional Ballet: $40/hr
- Ballet: $30/hr
- Specialized Belly Dance: $30/hr
- Other Dance Classes: $20/hr
- Fitness Classes: $15/hr

- Assistants: $10/hr or 1 free class

We pay more for 10+ years of teaching experience and Certifications from professional organizations.

We also give raises every 2 years ($5 per hour) and there is a flat $25 bonus for a student that a teacher brings in who registers for classes and stays at least 3 months.

Yes very low cost of living here!! $9 per hour as a beginner I would think would be fair here, but as the experience adds up so would the fee!! ;)

Just for future reference all monetary compensation needs to be discussed and documented before beginning teaching. And if you are a beginner than $9 an hour seems to be fair. We have assistance teachers making around that in my area.

That is quite low, not that there is really anything you could do now to change it. Being a dance teacher is a trained profession, not a minimum wage profession. How long did you personally take classes for? Probably upwards of ten years. That is ten years of schooling relative to the position you hold. Definently not minimum wage material.

Yes cost of living could be low where you live, and you may be a first year teacher, but anyone with 10+ years of training relative to their job deserves more. I know, if you're like me, you are having fun and love teaching and would probably never address it as a job, but more of a hobby... but, you still deserve a fair wage.

I guess take this for future reference for next years contract negotiation.

I won't tell you how much I started at, but it was more than double you...

a friend of mine reccomendes me to the owner and after a three lessons trialperiod she just hired me..my friend told me she was paid 10 euros per class and since the owner didn't mention anythin else I thought I was going to be paid the same as my friend or a little less...I'm a little shy and I hate money talks and since teaching is something I consider an incredibly interesting hobby and not a job I don't expect to pay my bills from it but I expect the owner to appreciate my work and pay me at least the marginal product of my labour...

I have a lot of experience and get 26 euros (38 dollars) an hour. I wonder if this is enough? Some guest teachers I know ask 50 euros (just under 74 dollars) a class, but I don't know if they get any work.

Unless you have an extremely impressive resume, I doubt that you are going to get 50 euros. That seems high even to me, I would think that $50 U.S (36 euros) is reasonably fair for a visting instructor. Perhaps a master instructor could get a bit more though...

What is your age? Because if you would be 13 or 14 years old, it would be a complete different story to me than being 23 or 24.

For $9 an hour, you should be working a drive thru. Seriously though, $9 for the hour that you're actually there teaching doesn't compensate for all the time you spend before and after class, preparing, choreographing, picking music, etc. I'm in a medium sized city (slightly smaller than say, Nashville), and we pay $15 an hour to START. After the first year or so, it goes up to $20, $25....
