Agh! Lovely!
I'm afraid I don't have any pictures, but I wanted to say Birmingham Royal Ballet's 1994 production of The Nutcracker was my main inspiration as a teenager.
They televised it one year (95 or 96 I think) and I recorded it onto video, I was hooked. So beautiful.
I kept that tape for a decade then found they have brought it out on dvd so I bought the dvd!
I can only find one (incomplete) clip on YouTube
www.youtube.com . . .
But it gives an idea of how detailed it was, and how gorgeous and flowing the costumes were.
Pity there isn't more, the opening scene has a great atmosphere and the festive scenery is lovely.
In that production, Miyako Yoshida was the sugar plum fairy, and no one has ever come close for me, the perfect enchanting fairy-princess, incredibly delicate hands and deft touches and movements. Nothing too flashy, not super flexible or archy feet, but for me was everything ballet is about, the otherworldly and ethereal creature and storytelling.
I prefer it to the Royal Ballet's version that you can find on YouTube (even though that is also Miyako)
Thank you for sharing those photos with us adageace |

You're welcome Miyako is definitely a beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy.
I know Chi Cao is in the Mozartiana pic, and I think that could be him in the Nutcracker one too, but I'm not 100% sure. |
