I don't think DDN is infected itself, but one of its banner ads is. It injects a vicious virus that causes a pop-up on your PC telling you that you're infected, and then automatically starts running "Alpha Antivirus Protection" - making it look like your computer is fixing itself. Actually, this "fix" is the virus. I tried to stop the "fix" from installing on my PC just now, and it wouldn't quit. I had to shut down my PC. My software did warn me in time, however, and there's no damage done. Several months ago, I got a PC virus that would open up hundreds of windows, locking up my PC, and then demand a payment for the "fix" software.

Luckily, I have AVAST software, which I found to be the best anti-virus, and it's free. It has 100,000,000 happy users, so I suggest you install it to protect yourself, if you don't have good anti-virus software already.

It just did this to me as well. I was trying to get to your post and my computer almost completely locked up and switched to the page you are referring to. If this happens, you guys can see the web address is something that does not look like a real one and it will show up like a window that is "my computer" or similar. It then says click ok to stop the virus. click the X instead and i got out of it. Very scary though!

Yikes! Image hotlink - 'http://bestsmileys.com/eek/6.gif' Thanks for the warning. I have AVG, but was thinking of switching to AVAST.

I think its ridiculous that I have paid both memberships to this site and everytime I log in I get popups.

Got the Trojan here too. My McAfee caught it and cleaned-up but...add this to the ads dropping-down into or popping-up in the middle of pages, it really irritates me.

I've gotten it as well or rather something very similar. This is the second time that it's happened to me.

Right now, I have a nice paper weight (read: laptop) at home because my anti-virus didn't find and stop it in time. I've heard that it's not exactly a virus, but something called hostage-wear.

Yeah, that's what I got previously and now as well. Called something like Windows Police Pro or Windows Anti-Virus Pro or something like that. I managed to get the thing off the first time, but I'm not able to get the latest incarnate off my laptop.

I've run Norton and anti-malware and they've both found nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really do not want to have to blow my laptop away and reinstall everything.

And, as much as I hate to say it, I know that both times, both viruses/hostage-wear have come from something on DDN. It was the only website that I had visited all day and both times, I hadn't clicked on any outside links or downloaded anything (not even gone and checked email).

Not to say you're necessarily wrong here, but it's a lot murkier than that. While you may not have been actively going to any other server (web or otherwise), your computer very well may have - modern user-oriented operating systems do a lot of little queries onto the net automatically, not to mention any doo-dads installed by the manufacturer or some user of the system. And if you're on an open network, look out. I've had systems that were infected within minutes of being plugged in from IP-scanning attacks.

And then sometimes your upstream router could be compromised, or another computer on the same network that manages to hop on over to yours. There's all kinds of ways, and I'm sure there'll be new ones, perhaps even hopping from your cell phone through bluetooth if your computer has that.

This is why we need very specific information to pursue these sorts of reports. What is the name of the virus? What ad (or even better, URL) is it coming from (and how do you know)?

We are asking our ad networks about controls, though without something concrete, we're in a tough spot to do anything.

This infected my netbook too. It was brand-new and didn't have any antivirus software running yet, so I was only visiting DDN. The ad takes up the screen so you can't click off it, and pretends to be running an antivirus program that's scanning your computer. If you click on the ad to close it, that's what infects your computer. It throws up tons of ads, opens porn websites in Internet Explorer, and has rendered my netbook completely useless. If you try to do anything, it throws up a pop-up telling you to activate your antivirus software, because the program or file you're trying to access is infected. Really nasty stuff.

The fake program is called "Antivirus Pro." I don't think it comes from a banner ad, it just pops up automatically. But it's definitely from DDN.

FYI, I very computer savvy and got a trojan virus that ruined my big computer. I'm so irritated. I got the virus from a pop up at DDN or FaceBook. I don't visit any other sites.

My computer is shot. :(

BOTTOM LINE: do not click on boxes that say you have a virus. Chances are that box you click on IS the virus.

My executables are corrupted and I need to wipe my drive.

Yeah, smileywoman IS NOT smiling.

Almost a year ago, when this happened to me the first time, I had an anti-virus program running, but it didn't catch this trojan horse. I then went out and bought another anti-virus program, but it still didn't catch it. I searched on the Internet, and found the one most recommended was AVAST - and it does catch this virus in time. Because it's free, I have no personal reason to promote it, other than it seems to be one of the few that works against this virus.

I am currently posting from husband's laptop. Why? One of those things invaded via some advert on DDN and my system is crashed. That's why I've barely been on lately. I thought I had good online security installed and I used Firefox and several other stopgap measures but it got through all that, too. It sucks, but if AVAST helps on my computer once my BIL fixes it, shux, I'll try it.

I think what's even worse is that DDN has nothing to do with those adverts that introduce these things but then people come on and they're angry so they automatically blame DDN for it when DDN isn't the one posting the content of the ads.

When I get my computer back maybe I can pay for another ad cert. I had one before and sure liked the hasslefreeness of it.

I havn't gotten that, but something like that happened to my family's computer a couple years ago when I was living at home. My parents spend a lot of money getting several different anti-spyware-and-virus programs installed on our computer.

Anyway, if I do get a message like that, what should I do to keep from getting the virus?

I second the Avast thing. I got that a while back when I got a virus on my computer, and it found it. A lot of other anti-viruses skipped over it. But avast was the only one that was known to find it!

Norton works pretty well, too. But don't get AVG unless you can afford the full version! They've got a free version, but it makes the computer work slowly, and it misses problems a lot.

I did manage to get it cleared off my laptop. It just took a while.

When I got the virus, it was so new, that the virus scanners didn't recognize it even with them having freshly updated virus definitions. Well, I was leaving on vacation the next day, so my laptop sat for a week being a nice paperweight. When I got back, I killed the rest of my network (so it couldn't infect anything else), updated my virus scanner again (Norton), ran Norton again, and lo and behold! Norton found it and had instructions on how to get rid of it.

It's not a pleasant virus, but it can be gotten rid of with a little patience and registry key deletions...blech!

Yeah, the website is going kind of slow for me, too, and I'm not sure if it's my computer or the website.

Now certain kinds of ads are loading up in such a way that when I hit the Back Button on the Explorer window, while on this site, instead of going to the previous DDN page, it takes me off the site and to some full sized ad page somewhere. If I hit the back button again, it renews the same off-site page. If I hit the back button again, it renews the same off-site page. If I hit the back button again, it renews the same off-site page. and so on and so on.

This exact thing happened to me on my work laptop yesterday just after I logged into DDN....I'm not very good with computers in terms of sorting out a virus and luckily my I.T department is sorting it...However, they had my laptop for 6 hours yesterday without being able to find and remove it.

Its actually putting me off logging on here again.

Ah ha, so thats where it came from!

I run on mac (but I'm not going to be smug about it, since they're expensive machines, and people who are like that are annoying) - but I am visiting my parents who run on an old PC, and this is exactly what happened to me after visiting DDN last week.

I have an ad free certificate I need to activate anyway, but yeah, that fake anti vrius-virus was putting porn on my mums desktop, haha. We had to take the computer away to be fixed . :(

Not blaming DDN though, just sharing my experience.
