Im about to turn 13 but dont know if I am too old because all my friends say to start around 5.I have no experience but I belive I can do it. I just think I would have to find place to go. I have been watching this show called make it or break it and its amazing watching those girls do those flips and i think if i keep at it and try my hardest i can be as good as them one day. 20 Replies to I'm about to turn 13 and want to start gymnastics. Hi,
Gym is hard but you don't have to start at 5. I started at 12. The first time is hard and your muscles will be sore, but it will take time to learn flips and such, as you have to build strength and flex in your back and abs. But i say give it a shot and see what you think.
Good Luck |

It depends what you want out of it. If you are looking to be an elite gymnast and have dreams of the Olympics then you are going to get easily discouraged right from the start because it is too late for that. The latest I've ever heard of an Olympian starting was age 9 (Alicia Sacramone).
However, there is a lot more that can be done with gymnastics. If you find that you have a natural talent for it and are able to stick it through for the next five years, it is possible to make a college team. Now this is still unlikely as most college teams require a minimum of level 9 gymnastics and many have elite gymnasts but its a more reasonable goal then the Olympics.
But even of making a college team is out of reach or even if you don't want to compete at all, there are still a lot of benefits of gymnastics. It is a great form of exercise. You really won't find anything better. It can teach self discipline and self respect. Its a great way o make friends for life as well. I would recommend finding a gym that offers beginner level classes for older starters. Nothing is going to hurt your ego more or discourage you then having a four year old show you up doing cartwheels! |

Too old to start and go to the olympics? probably
Too old to start and have fun, a good work out, and become a good gymnast? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
There is never an age in which you are too old to start a sport recreationally. never.
gymnastics is one of the most amazing things i've ever decided to do in my life. if my knee wasnt blown out before a championship meet a few years back i'd still be going.
I personally, was about 5/6 when I started, but many girls at my gym didn't start until their early teens. |

NO. Your definetly not too old. and no matter what other people say about the whole Olympics ordeal, you still can go to the olympics. the olympics honestly is not about how old you are, its about how well you do your sport. so if Nastia Liukin can become an elite gymnast at the age of nine, then some 13 years old just starting gymnastics can be an olympian. Good Luck!!!!!!:) |

I know there is a slim chance of this...and you might not even be interested anyway. But in 04 we had two gymnasts who were age 25. Shoot for the stars...rather it's making your high school cheerleading squad or making history. Don't listen to any "no you can't" attitudes. It's what you're willing to make of it.
go for it! |

Never too late. I started at age 16. My friend started at age 13 and she made it to team. A while ago on the news they interveiwed a senor citizens group who did little tour groups of dancing and this one lady taught herself the splits at age 60 or maybe it was 70 but anyway that was very impressive. I did not know you can be flexable at that age let alone not break any bones. |

I don't think it's too old. If your place starts with levels you will probably start at the beginning. And the ages will probably be like 5 years old. But you will go up levels a lot faster because you are older and pick up skills a little faster. Things you can work at home on are your strength and flexibility. |

I just turned 13, my mom let me start gymnastics when I was 12 at ASI gymnastics. I didn't really like it that much so I quit. My mom found a new gymnastics place, Empire Gymnastics Academy, and I LOVE it. Since I just started, they put me back at level1 ): but I thought that if I stick to it, I'll be on the competetive levels soon. They said you're never to old to do gymnastics, as long as you practice on your flexibility and stuff like that. |

Be that as it may, I never had any gymnastics training at all, and I did my last two handsprings at age 50. |

No, you are most definitely not too old!! I started when I was twelve, but had to stop when I was fourteen because they wouldn't bump me up because of age :/ But you can still learn a lot!!! Now I'm doing dance, but I really miss my gymnastics. |
