Hi gals and guys,
A while ago now I wrote a post saying I was going to try Bellydancing through workshops in my local area. I just though I would give you an update of sorts, as to my progress etc.
Well the workshops that I attended were great fun, and I really enjoyed the fan seminar, and moving around short fans and the huge long silk fans. It was very graceful and somewhat enchanting, and we even did this group exercise where we moved the fans as a routine!
I then bought myself a nice blue hip-scarf and joined the regular classes. They were oh so much fun, and I was greatful that the class quickly accepted me for who I am and I became an honourary 'one of the girls'. I found some of the moves challenging, although this was particularly joining them half-way through learning their pieces. Whilst my hips weren't as flexible as some of the others, they gradually loosened and I became a lot more at ease. At the end of the first term we even showcased our collected piece into a performance, although it was strictly to the other members of the group and respective partners and friends.
Unfortunately not long into the second term I had to give up my course due to working commitments and also the fact that my family had relocated to a different area. It was a sad time letting them know I couldn't go, and as I was a central part of the new routine they were learning (it had a male/female battle of the sexes type theme) I had a great amount of guilt.
But if my circumstances change I would very much like to get involved again if the group are willing to accept me back. I certainly hope so as I don't think there are many groups around here that teach this dance form, or who are so willing to take on male group members.
But at least you now know what happened with my foray into belly-dancing, one which I will always cherish and hope to rejoin in the future. 2 Replies to Re: A guy's first steps into Bellydancing... |

I'm so glad you had such a wonderful experience in the workshops and classes!
It's a shame that work commitments got in the way of your dancing, but sometimes we all need a term or two off. I'm sure if you keep in contact with the teacher and/or your classmates you will be welcomed back once more.
In the meantime, of course, don't forget to practice at home! |

Definitely practice at home so you stay fluid with your moves. |
