Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to Virtual International Schools production of La Bayadére. Programs are available if you would look under the Stage Room Forum. The lights dim and the Orchestra starts playing the overture as the curtain rises and reveals the first set.
Act 1 Scene 1: An Indian Temple
The High Brahmin, warriors and temple dancers enter the temple to celebrate the Indian Ritual of the sacred fire.
4 bars of 8 counts Warriors enter the temple and surround the side.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 High Brahmin enters and stands in front of sacred fire, slowly lifting
hands up to open fifth position.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Slowly walks to front of stage in traditional position (hands placed on
both shoulders).
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Continue walking to front of stage.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Stops and then stretched right arm to side.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Holds arm there.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Holds arm there.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Slowly brings arm across his waist, holding onto left wrist.

After Nikiya finishes the dance, the High Brahmin makes known his love for her. However, Nikiya rejects his love as she is already in love with Solor, a young warrior.
Nikiya is standing in first position with hands on either side of shoulders.
4 bars of 8 counts High Brahmin slowly walks towards Nikiya.
2 bars of 8 counts Nikiya starts to walk in opposite direction.
2 bars of 8 counts High Brahmin stretches arm to Nikiya, she looks in his direction and
then looks away.
2 bars of 8 counts Nikiya goes back into original position.
2 bars of 8 counts High Brahmin turns around to face sacred fire.
4 bars of 8 counts All dancers bring hand up into open fifth position and then bring it
through a prayer position into original positions.
4 bars of 8 counts Repeat, temple dancers walking forward to circle the fire.
2 bars of 8 counts High Brahmin walks to Nikiya.
2 bars of 8 counts He stops, looks away and then at Nikiya again.
4 bars of 8 counts He takes another step to Nikiya and then brings hands across his
heart and then stretches it to Nikiya.
4 bars of 8 counts Nikiya walks towards High Brahmin as he walks away, points to him
then turns around pretending to put a water vase on her shoulder and
then lifts hand high and points in palm up at him, rejecting him and
walks away to original position.
2 bars of 4 counts High Brahmin walks to Nikiya and puts his arm around her.
4 bars of 4 counts He turns Nikiya around and walks her but she pushes him away.
4 bars of 4 counts High Brahmin walks back to her pleading her to accept his proposal.
3 bars of 4 counts He takes off his crown and presents it to Nikiya.
4 bars of 4 counts Nikiya walks to him as he walks off.
2 bars of 4 counts High Brahmin grabs her and tried to kiss her, but she pushes him off.
1 bars of 4 counts Nikiya turns around to face him as he stares at her.
8 bars of 4 counts Stay in position.
4 bars of 4 counts Start to look away from each other.
4 bars of 4 counts They walk away from each other, Nikiya moving back to her original
position.
4 bars of 4 counts High Brahmin send Nikiya off, temple dancers following her.
Until end of music High Brahmin exits followed by warriors.
Nikiya enters the temple again after a while with a vase of sacred water. While waiting for Solor to appear, she dances by herself.
Music Introduction:
Nikiya appears on the top of stairs holding a vase of sacred water on her shoulder and then walks into the temple looking around to see if its empty. She lands up in stage right center in éffacé derriére.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Take 4 steps forward.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Take 2 more steps forward and then run stepping up into fifth en pointe.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Turn to face other direction and then do a pique en arabesque then run
forward and step up into fifth sur les pointe.

Until end of the music Nikiya places the Vase of water aside and then looks towards
stage left, waiting for Solor.
As Nikiya finishes her dance, Solor enters the stage and claps twice to announce his arrival. Nikiya jumps into his arms as they dance a beautiful Pas De Deux, proclaiming their love for each other.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Solor enters from stage right and claps his hand twice. Nikiya turns around
and relevés in fifth.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Nikiya runs towards Solor.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 She jumps into his arms and he spins her around on his right shoulder.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Solor puts Nikiya down on his right and then holds her waist as she goes
into arabesque position and then she turns to his other side.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Solor and Nikiya run in a big circle around the sacred fire.
1,2,3,4 Continue running until reach center stage.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Then Nikiya goes into arabesque with Solors arm around her waist and
then he promenades her then she goes into a pencheé and then brings her
feet down to fifth sur les pointe.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Nikiya courus away from Solor as he kneels in front of her.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya takes 2 steps to Solor walking behind him.
1,2,3,4,5,6 She then pauses in croisé derriére and then bends her back back.

1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya then turns a bit so her back is leaning on Solor and does a devéloppé
dévant.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya then brings her extended leg down and runs away from Solor to fifth
sur les pointe.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Solor grabs her hand and pulls as Nikiya courus sidewards towards Solor.
1,2,3,4,5,6 She continues to couru and then goes into a triple supported pirouette.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya stops facing stage left and then bends her back back and then front.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Solor then turns her in a single pirouette.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Solor then picks her up until shes horizontal to the ground and moves to
stage right and then puts her feet on the ground, but she is still leaning.
1,2,3,4,5,6 They bring opposite arms into fifth together and then into second.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Solor then twists Nikiya around so shes in a presage position but on his
left and hes holding her against his side.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya then brings feet to fifth sur les pointe as Solor lowers her.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya then takes 2 steps back holding Solors hands.
1,2,3,4,5,6 She take one more step back and then goes into fifth sur les pointe and then
does a devéloppé dévant.
1,2,3,4,5,6 Nikiya then does a fouette into a double pirouette en attitude, supported by
Solor.
1,2,3,4,5,6 After the second turn, Nikiya remains in attitude derriére and bends her back
back as Solor promenades her and then she brings her leg into arabesque.

devéloppé dévant.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Solor promenades her in that position then she does a double pirouette.

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 She then runs to him and holds his hands in hers.

sacred fire and then back to his heart.
1,2,3,4 Solor then brings up his hand and points to the heavens.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Nikiya then takes several steps forward.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 She does a pique to fifth sur les pointe and then courus on the spot.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 She courus in a big circle around the fire.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Then she courus in a turn.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Nikiya then runs forward to Solor and they entwine their arms.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 They then bring their arms down.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Then the two of them walk to the front center stage hand in hand.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 With their arms around each other, they relevé in fifth.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Then Nikiya goes into arabesque as Solor promenades her.
Until end of music Solor kneels down as Nikiya sits on his raised knee.
Unfortunately, the High Brahmin had seen them together and as the two lovers run off, the High Brahmin enters and swears to get his revenge on them.
2 bars of 8 counts Solor stands up as if hearing something, holding Nikiyas hands, he
looks into her eyes one more time and pushes her gently as if telling
her to go.
1 bars of 8 counts Solor and Nikiya run off stage.
1 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin enters on the top of the stairs.
4 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin runs down the stairs in the direction Solor went in
and then brings his hands over his head in a prayer position and then
slowly brings it down to his chest level.
1 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin suddenly pushes his hand apart and stomps to
the other side of the stage and turns to face the back.
2 bars of 8 counts He lifts his hands up to the ceiling and then stomps to behind the
sacred fire, facing the audience.
2 bars of 8 counts He lifts his hands up to the ceiling again and then brings it down
slowly into a prayer position.
1 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin points his finger in the direction Solor went in
and then looks in that direction.
Until end of music The High Brahmin stretches left arm to side and then brings right
arm all the way round and then clenches fist as if swearing revenge.
The curtain falls as the Orchestra starts to play the overture of the next Scene. The curtains rise again to reveal a new set.
Act 1 Scene 2: A room in the Rajahs palace
As the curtains open, a couple of warriors are on stage with the Rajah, celebrating in honor of his daughter, Gamzatti and the young noble warrior, Solor.
15 bars of 8 counts Overture. Curtains still closed.
6 bars of 8 counts Warriors enter, greeting each other.
1 bar of 8 count Rajah enters and the warriors greet him the traditional way.
2 bars of 8 counts Rajah orders the portrait of Solor to be brought out which is places
on stage left.
12 bars of 8 counts The Rajah and the warriors make a toast to Solor and the warriors
move to position.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Group on right walk around in a circle slowly.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Complete the circle and then stamp right foot twice.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Group of left repeat.
1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 Repeat.

change foot and repeat.

As the dancers and the warriors exit the room, the Rajah suddenly has the idea of giving Gamzattis hand in marriage to Solor. He then orders for Gamzatti to be brought to him.

As Nikiya and the Slave leave, the servant announces the arrival of the High Brahmin who wishes to speak to the Rajah in private. The High Brahmin warns the Rajah of Solor and Nikiyas secret relationship and the Rajah gets very angry.

see him.
2 bars of 8 counts Everyone bows to the High Brahmin as a sign of respect.
2 bars of 8 counts The Rajah points to the High Brahmin and then to the palace as if
asking why he has come.

disgustedly.
2 bars of 8 counts The Rajah shrugs his shoulder, asking why he did that and the High
Brahmin puts his palm to his mouth saying he wants to speak to the
Rajah in private.

3 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin points to Gamzatti and Solor who are leaving and
then brings his palms together twice while the Rajah shrugs.
2 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin puts his hand out in a stop like action as if not
allowing that. The Rajah walks towards him, ready to draw out his
dagger.
6 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin stares at the Rajah and then walks past him,
folding his arms across his chest, he paces back and forth and then
stops in front of Solors portrait. At this point, Gamzatti has crept in
at the back of the room and is earsdropping.
3 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin points at Solors portrait and then brings his
hands down as if towards the sacred fire and then points it to the sky.
The Rajah again asks what the High Brahmin means.
4 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin grabs Nikiyas veil which was left on the floor
and then walks back towards Solors portrait. Gamzatti calls her
servant over and orders her to bring Nikiya.
2 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin stretches out the veil in the Rajahs direction. The
Rajah grabs the veil and throws it onto the floor.
2 bars of 8 counts The Rajah bring his hand to the heart and then points at the heavens
and then brings his hand down in a fist and then walks away.
3 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin walks after him and pushes the veil in his
direction, but the Rajah just walks off.
3 bars of 8 counts The High Brahmin holds the veil to his chest and slowly walks off.
Gamzatti unfortunately had overheard the conversation and orders her servant to bring Nikiya to her. Gamzatti tries to bribe Nikiya with money and jewels to forget Solor. Nikiya rejects this and even tries to stab Gamzatti before running off. Gamzatti swears to get rid of Nikiya.
2 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti walks out from stage right holding on to her wedding veil,
she stops and pauses holding the veil to her chest.
2 bars of 8 counts She runs to the middle of the stage holding the veil up and then
bringing it down and holds it tightly against her chest.

then lets her hands down to her side.
2 bars of 8 counts Moves to the table beside the portrait and sits down, leaving the veil
on the table top.
2 bars of 6 counts The servant comes in and announces the arrival of Nikiya and
Gamzatti stands up and tells her to let Nikiya in.

sits down.
4 bars of 6 counts Nikiya enters and bows to Gamzatti as she motions for Nikiya to
come and sit beside her. Nikiya walks forward and sits down on the
floor next to Gamzatti.

looks away bringing her hand to a praying position.
2 bars of 6 counts Gamzatti takes off a bracelet and attempts to give it to Nikiya but
she rejects the present. Gamzatti then motions her to stand up.
2 bars of 6 counts She then walks Nikiya forward holding onto her shoulders and then
moves to the middle of the stage and stands a small distance from
Nikiya.
3 bars of 6 counts Gamzatti opens her arm to emcompass the entire room and then
brings them back to her own heart and then turns Nikiya to face
Solors portrait and pushes her in that direction as Nikiya covers
her mouth in shock.
2 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti walks towards Nikiya and places her hand on Nikiyas
shoulder and then violently turns her around and pushes her away.
2 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti runs over to the table where she placed her wedding viel
and then grabs it and walks over to Nikiya and then points to the
portrait of Solor and then places the viel over her heart.
2 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti throws the viel to the floor and then walks towards Nikiya
who walks backwards in a circle walking away from Gamzatti.
6 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti points at Nikiya accusingly and Nikiya bows in respect,
then Gamzatti walks away opening her arms around the room and
then brings her hand to her heart. Then she looks at Nikiya and uses
her hand and scans it from Nikiyas head to toe and then brings it
up as if holding a vase of water. Nikiya turns away and Gamzatti
grabs her and turns her violently so that Nikiya falls on the ground.

palms facing the ground as if saying no and then runs to exit and
points out at the temple and then moves to the middle and lifts arms
up to open fifth over an imaginery fire and then points to Solors

same action twice.
3 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti runs over to Nikiya and grabs her arm as Nikiya moves
away. Gamzatti gets on her knees, begging Nikiya and then pulls
Nikiya down on the floor as they do a turn and Gamzatti slaps her.

3 bars of 8 counts Gamzatti takes off her necklace and offers it to Nikiya but Nikiya
refuses. Gamzatti tires to offer it again but to no avail. She tries
again and Nikiya takes it and throws it to the floor and pulls
Gamzatti away.

approaches her, Nikiya attempts to stab her, but Gamzatti runs behind
her servant who stops Nikiya.

Until end of music Gamzatti stands in center stage and then brings arms into a fist from
fifth into first as servant falls on her knees.
