I was inspired to create this post after Incarnadine's post about spin pins. I'm able to quickly pull my almost-hip length hair into a neat, secure bun that doesn't come out with vigorous exercise, using only one hair stick.

Your hair doesn't have to be straight, although it's much easier to learn by watching me put up my straight hairs since you can see where the loops go. I tried the same on Lauren's (jazz_lover) curly hair and it worked fine too. ;)
Style 1:

These are slightly messier than the intended result because I was taking pictures by myself with a self-timer when I was doing it. :)

To begin: you need to comb your hair out. I was able to put hair up when it's freshly washed without any styling products, but I think it holds a little better with day-old dirtier hair.

Style 1:

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1001.jpg'

Hold your hair in a ponytail. It can be high or low. I like mine to sit around the middle.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1002.jpg'

Twist clockwise, and start to wrap your hair around your thumb.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1003.jpg'

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1004.jpg'

Then hold your left hand there, with your thumb pressed against your head for support.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1005.jpg'

Take your right hand and start wrapping the tail of your hair counterclockwise against the base of the ponytail, between your thumb and your head.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1006.jpg'

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1007.jpg'

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1008.jpg'

Wrap until almost all of your hair is looped.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1009.jpg'

Take the hair stick, and put it in the loop of hair that your thumb was in, in the same direction your thumb points.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1010.jpg'

Catch the loop of hair underneath (that contains the majority of your hair wrapped around the ponytail base) and push.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style1011.jpg'

The loop originally created by your thumb should expand slightly, and push the hair stick out, so it sits above the loop.

Here's a video of the whole process...excuse my silly face :)

Style 2: start off with combed hair with small amounts of styling product if you desire. Gather your hair into a ponytail wherever you want the bun to sit.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2001.jpg'

This time, hold your ponytail with your left hand, and thumb beneath the ponytail.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2002.jpg'

Wrap your hair counterclockwise around the base of the ponytail, so the loop forms between your thumb and your head.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2003.jpg'

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2004.jpg'

Wrap, wrap, wrap, until all your hair is in that second loop.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2005.jpg'

Put the hair stick into the loop made by your thumb in the same direction as your thumb is pointing.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2006.jpg'

Catch the right side of the larger loop that you made by wrapping the rest of your hair around the ponytail base.

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v629/liteairyfairy/Style2007.jpg'

Push your hair stick out of the center of the larger loop. And there you go, another neat and pretty bun! Here's a video if you're still confused.

I hope it helps! You can find hair sticks in many online boutiques, or if you have any Asian stores in your area. I used a small Hello Kitty chopstick because it contrasts the most with my dark hair, but I usually use a black one so it doesn't stick out, or a blinged out metal one if I'm wearing it to a formal event.

I just got the first one down! I'm so excited; my hair feels so secure and looks so nice and it took no time at all! I'm going to keep hair sticks on me all the time now for those days when I wake up with nice hair but by noon it's a sorry sight. You're the bestest Haili!

I don't own any hair sticks, but I tried the first one and stuck a pencil in it instead and it held until I went to bed and had to take it out.

This is a life-changing moment for me!!

I didn't have any hair sticks so borrowed my mums chop sticks to try it ..and it works although they were rather large. Note to self: invest in proper ones

Helen and Clairey:

Trust me, it would be MUCH easier with a proper hair stick. I've tried the pencil before and it works, but really snagged my hair. And I also had the misfortune of snagging my hair on the splinters of one of those cheap takeout bamboo chopsticks. Don't do it! :P

How long does your hair have to be for these to work? I have hair that's a few inches below my shoulders and I feel like I'm not doing them right, but it's difficult to tell because I can't see the back of my own head :P

EDIT: And my hair is so unruly that I just broke a hair stick trying the second one. I don't know my own strength :P

I got the Second one you posted to work, Iliah and my hair is only a bit past my shoulders, with layers and it's wavy.

Angelina, I keep trying the one you posted, and it might just be because my hair is too short, but it REALLY hurts!

Thanks for posting this Iliah, I think I'm gonna wear this to work tonight.
