Teaching Acro / how to get certified, become more knowlegeable en>fr fr>en

How many of you out there teach acro? I have not taken gymnastics, but have lightly assisted with a few acro classes (mainly stretching and conditioning, spotting bridges and basic stuff). How can I become more knowlegeable (any books or material you recommend ) as well as certification options. Our studio covers very basic tumbling, but I'm looking to take it to the next level and want to be prepared, as well as keep it safe for the kids. Thanks!!

I teach basic and beginning/intermediate acro only. I learned from taking and assisting classes at my studio when I was in high school. I didn't start taking acro classes myself until I was way too old (17) and scared. So I was never able to do much more than a front limber or handstand forward roll. But I learned alot about spotting and technique from being in the class and assisting in other classes.

I also went on to get certified through Dance Masters of America and teach according to their syllabus. Once the kids are ready for anything more difficult than I can safely teach, I have to send them elsewhere (to a local gym).

I would recommend trying to watch or assist in classes to get started. Learn how to spot and learn about the proper technique for each skill.

Hi

There are few UK based dance exam boards that do acro/gym dance exams and certification, though generally you qualify/specialise as a dance teacher (classical or modern) and then branch into the acro. It may be worth you looking at these syllabi, and then with the assisting spotting other students and teachers, you can develop the safety and technique aspects as well as understanding of preogression and age specific work. Perhaps ask the teachers you assist what they did too, if you are in the US.

As far as gymnastics goes, in the UK you can register and qualify with the British Gymastics governing body, who are part of the FIG which is the world governing body for gymastics - if you google them they should be able to help. They have courses in tumbling acro and cheer too.

Hope some of this was useful!

There is PAEC which offers exams for acro and has a teacher examination in order to become a member, this could certify you to teach it, although I'm not sure whether there is a course or anything before you do the exam.
