Advanced & Professional Ballet Still looking professional in a more relaxed environment? en>fr fr>en By pointeprincess5 Comments: 864, member since Sun Jun 10, 2007On Mon May 24, 2010 06:17 PM
This is more of a contemporary ballet question, but I was curious as to what you guys thought. I have company class on Mondays and Wednesdays for the contemporary company I'm in. Mostly everyone wears some sort of yoga pants, with tank tops, jackets, etc and I do too, but lately I've been really getting into the "professional" look (I'm firstly a ballet dancer) and would like to look a bit more professional (clean pink tights and slippers or pointes, neat black leotard with black shorts or skirt with hair in a neat bun with no flyaways) and I have a chance to wear this attire on the days when I don't have company class, but I am wanting to look more professional on company days. My company director has told me not to wear a ballet skirt as it makes me dance "like a ballet dancer", so I can't wear a skirt and I'm sure a bun would have the same effect on me, but otherwise, my director is pretty relaxed with what we wear to his classes. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could wear that is more professional, but not typical ballet attire? 4 Replies to Still looking professional in a more relaxed environment? |

If you are trying to look polished but stay away from stereotypical ballet attire, I'd try the following:
Hair: French twists, a French braid, anything but a plain bun.
Clothes: No plain black camisole leotards. Look for contemporary designs/colours/fabrics but still make sure they are in good repair, clean, fit you well etc. so you maintain a professional image. Try to stay away from crazy backs on leotards or ones that show two much skin, I find these distracting and non-professional looking. In terms of tights, you might try black footless tights or black shorts. Make sure the shorts cover your bum when you dance.
Other than this I don't see how else you can dress without getting too sloppy. |

If you are being partnered, do your partner a favor and wear a leotard. |

Try things like a black leo that looks like a cam,i top and grey trackpants that can be rolled up when you are hot. you are still in a contemporary company. I would keep your tops nice and fitted neat etc and then be a bit more relaxed on the bottom track pants shorts extremely flared 3/4 lengths could make you fee like you are wearing a skirt. |

I agree with angel dancer - a leo with some nice light trackies which can be rolled up when you want your legs to show. No tights is what I'd go with. |
