8-10 year olds love the music from the Disney movies and those are always safe. Camp Rock 2 just came out and there are a few good upbeat songs on there. Also you could use Justin beiber songs. I have also used songs from the glee soundtrack with them and they like that too. They have an upbeat remix of halo and walking on sunshine which gives them a little bit of the top 40 that they like because it's " what the big girls listen to" and a little bit of fin clean kids music too.

Great ideas, DDanceDepot - thanks.

I actually had thought of Glee and I already have the music. As for Justin Bieber - well, I'm not so sure I want to be hearing that myself! haha

I have actually been developing my new playlists for class and am pretty excited to have seen this thread.

preschool/tot:
how much is that doggie in the window
its raining its pouring
+ many other nursery rhymes (CD called Truckful of Tunes)
Laurie Berkner songs
Strawberry Shortcake
Old School Mary- Kate and Ashley Olsen CDs (my girls love the gimme pizza song to use during our straddle stretches)
Sesame Street
All of these are a little changeup from the usual disney songs.
I also use disney CDs that are not all songs from disney movies-- (Mickey Unrapped or Disney's Springtime favorites.)

Tap and Jazz Combo classes:
Raven Symone CDs
Lizzie Mcguire CDs
Ray Charles
Queen

For HipHop across the floor and warm-ups I use a lot of Jock Jams CDs and Will Smith. I also play Kidz Bop or Glee depending on the age of my girls.

Hope these build up your lists =)

beautiful feet (Sandy Patty)
once upon a december (Anastasia)
Fly to your heart (Tinkerbell)

Friends are Friends forever
Pigbasket (Laurie Berker)
Reflection (Mulan)
Spoonfull of Sugar

How about looking into the Disney radio music? They sell cd's and are all upbeat and CLEAN! My kind of music. I only teach ballet right now, but sometimes I like to change the classical music around and I use the following:
Evanescence, especially My inmortal and Bring me to Life
Cirque du SOleil-Journey of man, La Nouba, Mystere, and the Taiko drum ssection.
Taiko drums music
Apcalyptica- Inquisition Symphony- all Metallica music played with cellos. Beautiful.
Operas: Phantom of the opera, Faust
Romanza by Andrea Bocelli
Music from Wicked- Defying Gravity

I know I'm a little behind on music times, but I can't seem to find music with decent lyrics I can use!

Hip Hop songs are so hard to find... That's pretty much all I teach and I agree that the kids get bored.. It's so hard to find edited music! If you ever have anymore suggestions of new songs please let me know! :)

For hip hop, try some dubstep music. It's techno, but with really awesome beats, very suitable for hip hop. Most techno is pretty clean, and a lot of it is instrumental anyway. One of my favorite songs right now is "Cracks" by Freestylers (the Flux Pavilion Remix). Come to think of it, Melanie used it for a solo on SYTYCD, so I have a feeling it's about to blow up. :)

"Cracks" — youtu.be . . .

I'm teaching a beginner modern class 8-11 yrs old and looking for appropriate songs.... Possibly some with a good drum beat, I'm open to anything, so lease share if u teach a traditional modern class. I usually buy most of my music on I tunes.

Pink Dance Diva -

I teach a traditional modern class and find that I use a lot of Mickey Hart in class, the Supralingua and Planet Drum albums in particular. I also have an album called Tribe by Gabrielle Roth & the Mirrors that is terrific in class.

Occasionally I use tracks with lyrics - not often, though. Here is a sample of what I used for a recent "fun" class:
Send Me on My Way - Rusted Root
Something in the Way She Moves - James Taylor
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
Up on the Roof - The Drifters
Late in the Evening - Paul Simon
I'll Fly Away - Alison Kraus
Take Five - Dave Brubek (okay, so no lyrics!)
No Man - Nina Storey
Hey Soul Sister - Train
Cap Cod Kwassa Kwassa - Vampire Weekend

Hope this helps.
