Wondering if/how your studios have done evaluations?

Do you get a written evaluation every X months? Once a year? Do you have a sit-down discussion with your SO? Did the parents/students evaluate you?

Were the evals useful?

Thanks!! :)

Where I teach the parents fill out an evaluation at the end of each year. It asks questions about each teacher, the office manager, and the studio in general. However, the surveys go directly to the SO, and I never see them completed.

I suppose if there was an issue that the SO felt necessary to discuss, she would schedule a meeting with me. But she does not do official evaluations.

I had one, at one time, but never used it as I never really had issues that I could not address at the moment. I just kept a record of any problems and if it had caused me to want to fire someone, I just did.

If there were any issues, I addressed them at the time of incident and my teachers (nothing major, mind you) were always too happy to make sure things worked well. I was blessed in that sense.

I think that it is a good tool, though, for larger schools, where the owner cannot be on top of things all of the time.

I know that the SO does issue surveys to the customers, although they are specifically about the teachers. (I assume they discuss the entire experience.)

The SO does do an evaluation of each teacher that is mainly her observations, although I have no doubt that parent/student feedback plays somewhat into this. She does sit down individually with each instructor for a few minutes. Honestly, I have no clue what is discussed. She has always given me hire marks and I have been told that she didn’t need to discuss anything with me. I suppose I should feel relieved, but I would like some further feedback.

What I have read here, surveys and evaluations don't typically give the sort of feedback that is desired. However, they may reveal a few areas that may otherwise go unnoticed.

I've done the parent's survey before, but haven't needed to do any sort of teacher evaluation. I plan on having sit-downs this coming year with a couple of my new teachers, but that is because they are both 17 and teaching on their own for the first time- so it's still a situation where they are student teachers and I plan on keeping pretty close tabs on them.

I don;t know if I would do formal teacher evaluations in "report-card" style. If I have a problem with a teacher, I'll sit down and discuss it with them.

I did this once years ago and never did it again. Most of the "complaints" or "suggestions" that I got were to change things that I was not willing to change like dress code or waiving my "if you show up 15 minutes or more late you sit our of class" rule.

It didn't turn out to be as constructive for me, at least, that I thought it would be so I figured it was just a waste of time and stopped doing it.

At one school where I worked, the SO did a verbal sit-down eval with me. We discussed the expectations of the class for the year prior to the season start. We recorded our goals they we were both setting upon ourselves and then committed them to paper and both signed and dated them. In May, we sat down again and reviewed our notes and evaluated how we both felt the classes were going. If there were any parent concerns that were not urgent enough to bring up during the year, they were addressed then. Obviously, if anything was pressing, it was brought up when it occurred.

Another school where I taught did something similar. We set goals at the beginning of the year and then reviewed them in June after classes ended and she saw the progress of the students in the recital. I was also told what my percentage of re-registrations were from the previous year. If students dropped, I was made aware of my "drop-rate". One particular year, we were awarded bonuses based on who had the lowest drop rate. Each teacher was calculated differently since we all had different teaching hours.

I also have worked at schools that administer parent surveys. They are general about the teacher and the class, but they do also ask questions on the office staff, the Management, the cleanliness of the school and the ability to register for classes. It has truly helped the overall service that the schools can provide.

My rec center uses a combination of written evaluations from a supervisor every term ( 3-4 months) after watching several , parent and student surveys and " check in" meetings every 3 weeks to dicuss every thing that is happening . I also email , phone , or see my supervisor as needed with urgent stuff.
