Acro/Tumbling Any late starters to tumbling? Support please! en>fr fr>en By pooeysopranie Comments: 72, member since Wed Nov 01, 2006On Wed Aug 04, 2010 05:58 PM
I used to be a cheerleader freshman year of high school, and learned how to do a back handspring, but eventually I psyched myself out and was too afraid to do it anymore. Now I'm 21 and I really want to get back and re-learn some tumbling skills. I really want to conquer my fear! I dance now, so I have pretty strong legs and I'm in good shape, but my arms are most likely not strong enough to do a back handspring yet. I know starting this late is going to be extremely hard, but I think that my body is still capable of tumbling. Also I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I'm only 5 feet tall. The only problem is that I can't find any classes for adults in my area (I live in Phoenix) and I'm afraid I would end up in a class with really young kids. Are there any other late starters? Any advice or success stories? 1 Replies to Any late starters to tumbling? Support please! |

Hi there,
I would say definitely give the tumbling another shot if can find somewhere that does it. And don't be afraid to consider joining a class with varying age members. They're aren't many things in life that are age specific now. And as you're 21 then there's still a lot of scope there (they say you're physical peak for most athletes is 30)
Can relate to what you're feeling though, and at least you have your cheerleading and dance as experience. I didn't start baton-twirling until I was 22, and only had a few evening dance classes in the years before. Add to the fact that twirling is generally a sport for much younger people, and it is difficult at times. I'd be lieing if I said I didn't worry what people thoguht of me, but I put it to the back of my mind. Mostly as I'm trying my darn hardest to prove any naysayers wrong. And I'm having a blast too! Luckily the federation my troupe is associated with takes people of all ages and abilities.
I say if you want to do it again then go for it! After all you're never to old to follow your dreams |
