Welcome to Reel Treble #44!
In this issue we meet Chiara, a.k.a. RAID_Babe, a beginner/primary dancer from South Australia.

Name: Chiara
Dance.net Name: RAID_Babe
Member since: February 2010
Years Doing Irish Dance: 10 this year – 4 competitive
Age: 15
Dance School: Roberts Academy of Irish Dancing
Competition Level: Beginner/Primary
Region: South Australia

What is the story behind your DDN name?

My dance school is RAID....and I'm clearly not a guy, so I put 'babe'. LOL

How old were you when you started Irish Dance and how did you get started?
I was 6 when I started Irish Dancing. My mum enrolled me in a school up the road from our house.

How many classes do you have a week?
At the moment, I do 2 classes a week, and a private lesson every second week. Hoping to start a 3rd class.

How often do you practice at home?
I practice Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Did Irish Dancing come naturally to you or did you have to work at it?
I wish it came naturally! Haha. No, I've had to work my butt off to get to a primary level. But hard shoe comes more naturally than soft shoe.

Does Irish Dancing get in the way of your school work or social life?
I think the question here is, does school work get in the way of my dancing? And yes, yes it does. As for a social life...what social life?

What do your friends think of your dancing? Do they support it?
They think it's cool, but no, they don't really take an interest in it.

Do you do figure dances?
If that's teams, yes. Lol. I think we've stopped, because States has been and gone.

What does your dress look like and who made it?
I wear a teams/school dress, which I bought. It's mostly blue and white, with plenty of sparkle. It was made by Jess Knight.

What brand of softshoes and hardshoes do you wear?
Soft Shoes: Antonio Pacelli's.
Hard Shoes: Rutherford's.

What is the farthest you've traveled for a feis?
About 40 minutes.

What is your favorite feis and why?
The AIDA feis, I always come home with a decent placing. However, I reckon it'll be my new schools feis, never been to it.

Have you ever been to a major championship?
Yup! State Championships for teams.

Do you get nervous before you compete?
Before solos, no. Unless I just learnt a new dance. For teams, yes. I went on stage at States, crying.

"Dance hard, dance proud, dance strong. --RAID_Babe

Do you have any rituals you do before you dance?
I give my mum and dad and hug and kiss, then run through my steps, with my hands.

What is your greatest accomplishment in Irish Dancing?
Going to the South Australian State Championships, for teams. Also, getting graded into mostly primary, in 4-5 feis's.

What was your greatest disappointment in Irish Dancing and how did you overcome it?
Staying in beginner. But I worked hard and got most of those dances, into primary.

What are some of your short term goals?
To get graded into primary, fully, after the next feis.

What are some of your long term goals?
To be in intermediate by August next year and do State Solos.

What is your favorite dance and why?
Primary treble jig, because I am good at it and I love the way it sounds and looks. Also primary reel, because it involves a lot of intricate steps and moving across the floor heaps. And light jig because it's just awesome, lol.

What is your least favorite dance and why?
I used to hate slip jig. But I'm not going to say that, because I'm going to work hard and get graded.

What move took you forever to master?
When I was 6, beginner reel. Now? I don't know. Probably slip jig or primary treble jig.

What is your favorite move?
Hmm, I have heaps! I like skips and treble sequences. I just like making up steps or merging steps.

Do you ever want to take the TCRG exam and teach?
Yea, I do. I want to be just like my teacher, when I'm older.

Who do you admire the most in Irish Dancing?
My dance teacher, because of his hard work and patients, and one of my best friends, because she's always been there to help me.

If you could take a free workshop with any dancer as your teacher, who would you pick and why?
No idea! Haha.

...I still danced to it, realising it was wrong...

Tell us one of your funniest or most interesting feis stories.
I was on stage for my primary treble jig, and my teacher was on music. Soon as the music starts, I could hear that isn't wasn't primary, but beginner. I still danced to it, realising it was wrong. I got to about the middle step, when the judge was motioning me to stop. And I looked at my teacher and we both giggled. Of course I was nearly in a fit of laughter, but I held it back.

What was your most embarrassing moment in dancing?
Crying once I got off stage at States and crying because I never had to do beginner reel again. I haven't tripped....yet!

Are you close with fellow Irish Dancers?
I am. All of my close friends come from dance, even different clubs.

What's in your dance bag?
Shoes, drink bottle, stuff I haven't seen in months!

Do you do any other types of dance?
Nope. I did ballet and jazz when I was little, before Irish, but not anymore.

Do any of your family members Irish Dance as well?
No, they never will. They all hate the music.

What other hobbies do you have?
I really don't have other hobbies. I do play volley-ball in the Summer though.

Tell us something your friends would find surprising about you.
Nothing would surprise my friends! I'm loud and awesome! Lol.

Quick Fire Questions:
Hardshoe or Softshoe: Hard Shoe
Reel or Slip Jig: Reel
Hornpipe or Treble Jig: Treble Jig
