Not sure where to post this-sorry!
I have a group of 6 dancers this year, all who are new to competitive. They aren't strong dancers (some can barely do a single pirouette). The average age is 16. I'm to enter them in the open category, but I have no idea what kinda of theme or song or any idea of what choreo to do with them!
Does anyone have any ideas?! I'm desperate!

Have you looked at this website - dances to go.

They have dances you can purhcase for very little money and music to download as well

If technique is weak, then make sure character is strong. Try doing quirky dances of 'characters', such as having them all be ragdolls or robots, or something of the like. That way, their quality of movement won't seem so disparate from other dances: the quality of movement required for the dance more readily matches what they do naturally.

What I think would be quite cute and suit all the ages of your dance group, is to do the "single ladies" by beyonce`.
But obviously add an individual twist and adjustment here and there so it's not a complete rip off. Stick to the basic outline of the music video though so the dance is easily recognized by the audience. I remember at school how a couple of boys did "single ladies" on the stage during assembly, it was a huge hit! They had the audience eating out the palms of their hands! No matter the performer, the dance has such character, I really think you should give it a go :)
hope this helped
xx

^I think that sounds like a terrible idea, to be really honest. Not only for the fact that you've got beginners, and Beyonce is clearly far beyond beginner, but why would you jack someone elses choreography and claim it as your own? Talk about one stop shopping toward earning your studio a horrible reputation!

In Open, you can literally do anything you want. So...what do you want to do? Tap? Jazz? Ballet? Fast music? Slow music? Have them change formations? No formation changes? What do you like?

I used adam lamberts "for your entertainment". The beginning is them as dolls or puppets coming to life (slower rigid movements) and then when the singing starts they kinda break out of it. Its pretty much jazz, but I'm really having a hard time with choreo. They don't have good enough technique for something really fast but the choreo I have given them so far is getting repetitive and quite stand still. They have done 2 different formations so far ( 2 lines staggered and 2 V shapes on either side). If anyone has ideas please let me know!

I would use music that is a little slower with heavy beats - like Lady Gaga's Paparazzi or the Glee version of Bust the Window (mind you, these songs may not be appropriate for you to use in a competition, I am just giving you song examples for tempo and style). Use dynamic formations and level changes while keeping the choreography simple, but very clean. Use creative transitions from formation to formation. Keep is simple and tight. The tighter the choreography gets, over time your girls will be hungry for and able to execute more complicated moves. Good luck, and have fun!
