Locked by Felsa (169953) on 2010-10-06 14:19:58 I have decided to hold off and get some training first

I am going to be sending off an audition form pretty soon for a really major audition. I do not want to say what it is for because I am trying not to get my hopes up. All I will say is it a HUGE show and it is a traveling show and it would be an absolute dream to be a part of.

That being said, I am having trouble understanding the audition for you have to fill out. The questions are as followed

1. How many years of professional training do you have in this type of performance?
2. How many years of professional experience do you have in this type of performance?
3. How many years of professional training do you have in physical theatre?
4. How many years of professional experience do you have in physical theatre?
5. How many years of experience do you have in street theatre?
6. Please indicate any other discipline you pursue or relevant professional experience.
7. How many years of professional training do you have in this activity?

Now my background in acting is
- Was in my first show when I was 9 and have been acting ever since, so 11 years.
- Have competed three times place First, Second and somewhere below third.
- Have been in 13 stage shows, most of which ran for at least 3 months and one was a traveling show.
- For film I have been an extra in a music video, extra in three short films, a small speaking role in a short film and a supporting role in a feature film.
- The only "training" I have is grade 9 and 10 drama (I nearly failed grade 10 :P) and a one day audition course.

So as you can see, I have been doing stuff, but if I answer all the questions, my answers are all zero years. I really have no training and I have done no professional shows. And the only other discipline I can put down is highland dance but I have not done that for 2 years.

So am I stuck putting zero years for everything? How can I make it look like I have experience acting? Also what is street theatre?

Street Theatre?

To be honest, though I don't know what this particular job is, I'd hazard a guess it's something like a TIE touring production. Jobs like this tend to take people with actual professional training (such as a two or three year course) and that's why they have specifically asked questions about professional training.

If you really want to make it in this industry, I'd highly recommend doing some training.

These kind of questions are usually to make clear what kind of people they want to see in an audition. Just the word 'audition' attracks all kinds of people, 'everybody' thinks they can audition. Well, they can, like I can apply for an engineering job (do I need to say I'm not trained for that, and my experience doesn't go further than Lego :)), but this company obviously doesn't want untrained, unexperienced people.

If you decide to go for this, be aware that your competitors will be professionally trained (fulltime, for some years?), with lots of professional experience (fulltime, for some years?). These people are really looking for these kinds of auditions, as some auditions/jobs hardly demand more than an amateur level. They want a challenging job and this is such a job.

Take in consideration if you can meet the expectations of the company. If not, you can still go for audition, because the learning process can help you too. If you want to go, fill in your training/experience as you told us. You don't have to stick to their questions.

Unfortunately the form is done online and you have to click on the answers (basically how many years). After thinking about it I think I will either send in my stuff now and hope for an audition and use it to grow, or wait a few years and get some training. Well I will get training either way as I am now seeing how important it really is.

Thankfully auditions are on going so I am hoping one day I will make this show. Hopefully sooner then later.
