^It's not like they put the image up on a giant screen for everyone to see. To me "completely exposed in public" means making you get up on a stage and strip down to nothing while everyone watches. Definitely not what is happening here.

I guess I really don't understand what the huge deal is.

Then again, this is coming from someone who has been involved in the medical field for the past six years. I think my opinion would be similar to the people who operate these full body scan machines. I've seen so many butts and boobs and naked bodies, they all look essentially the same in the long run. Whenever I have to see someone's private parts it doesn't even phase me. It's just another crotch, nothing special. I'm sure the security people hold a similar point of view. However with them, it's not even really looking at a naked body. It's a computerized image of a naked body. Way different. Also, these people will be looking for weapons, not focusing on how your butt looks.

For those of you who are so concerned about being "exposed," be warned that god forbid you end up in a hospital, you're going to have to expose a lot more than just a scanned image from afar. Just saying.

^Oh goodness, that's so completely different that it's not a fair comparison.

Today on the radio I heard a discussion that said that terrorists could have bomb stuff surgically implanted and so it wouldn't show up on a scan or a pat down. Eek!

If someone wants to make it through the security..they will FIND a way through. Especially with all of the loopholes.

This is one of the silliest arguments for upped security measures in ANYTHING. It's like saying, "Well if someone wants to break into your house they will anyway...so why bother locking the doors or getting a security system? They'll end up doing more damage to your house if they have to break in."

Try this one on for size, "People are going to find a way to counterfeit money, why waste all that money on designs and technology if they are just going to figure out a way to get around it anyway."

How about this, "Kids are going to try alcohol and drugs...so as a parent why don't I just give it to my child or leave it out so he and all of his friends can try it? Why bother inconveniencing myself and others and provide obstacles for him?"

See where I am going with this? You don't know how many threats have been stopped, and you don't know how many current threats they get a day. Maybe you shouldn't presume the government is just thinking about ways to screw with you.

If the TSA was so worried about our safety, why are they not screening 100% of the air cargo?

I have no problem with the full body scanner as I've done twice in the last month. I also know that I get looked over twice as I have surgically implanted devices, so I just hand them my card and walk through.

^ You can get cards? I don't believe my dad has one, not that he flies often anyway. My dad would be one to make the news- ex-marine with a very short temper. If someone attempted to do to him what I've seen in those videos he would break their neck and not think twice :/.

Yes, youre supposed to get a card.

And an update:
Just went through security at an international airport and nothing here has changed. Same procedure, same amount of time as was last month. No ball/ass grabbing here. Maybe I'll have better luck getting a happy ending at JFK on Monday.

^ Great. :( I've been on the undecided side of this debate, reading along but not dipping my feet in just yet. The more I read, the less enthused I am about the plane tickets I had bought for Winter Break. I won't be flying nearly as often anymore, although my planned trip to the UK over the summer will make total avoidance impossible.

If I have a choice, I'll probably go with a pat down: they don't keep that as a digital file for eternity, and I don't think anything about my body will stand out so much that it's burned into someone's memory forever either. Still, I hope that smiles and obedience will help me avoid both.

^ In response to your comment, I googled the title and found a lot of "Satire" on it, but not a legit article. Unless someone can find a legit one, I'm a bit less perved out, while still hesitant.

Yeah, I googled a bit and found this source:
www.dailysquib.co.uk . . .

DENVER - USA - A full body scanner operator was caught masturbating during a scanning session by airport staff late Tuesday.

Airport officials at Denver International airport were on high alert yesterday when a full body scanner operator was caught masturbating in his booth as a team of High School netball players went through the scanner.

"The young ladies were going through the scanner one by one, and every time one went through, this guys face was getting redder and redder. His hand was moving and then he started sweating. He was then seen doing his 'O' face. That's when the security dragged him out of his booth and cuffed him. He had his pants round his ankles and everybody was really disgusted," Jeb Rather, a passenger on a flight to New York told CBS news.

The controversial scanners display every minute detail of a person's body and have been called intrusive by privacy campaigners. Body scanners penetrate clothing to provide a highly detailed image so accurate that critics have likened it to a virtual porn shoot. Technologies vary, with millimeter wave systems capturing highly detailed pictures of genitals, and backscatter X-ray machines able to show precise anatomical detail. The U.S. government likes the idea because body scanners can detect concealed weapons better than traditional magnetometers.

"What do you want to do, get blown up by a goddamn Arab at 30,000 feet or we get to see your private parts? It's up to you, the ball's in your park," head of the TSA's scanning department, Rodney Schroeder, told CNN.

I'm pretty sure it's satire too- I mean, look at the other headlines on that page! Plus, what would a high school netball team be doing going to Denver??????

The Daily Squib is a curious satirical publication and should therefore be taken fu**ing seriously ;)

From the bottom of their main page.

In addition, SNOPES BEFORE YOU POST! Snopes says FALSE.

It's basically like citing The Onion. (Also a satirical "news" source, children.) And failblog??? Come on now, you're not even trying!

So the pat downs are supposed to be done by TSA officers of the same gender as the passenger, are they?

Hmmm...

www.youtube.com . . .

Actually, that video probably also answers the question about what happens to your belongings after they've gone through the machines and you're having your pat down.

By the way, there's no way I'm going anywhere near the USA with this madness. If this means I'll never get to visit my DDN pals or see a Broadway show, then so be it. I don't like it so I won't fly. Wonder how many other potential tourists feel the same. But that's ok. Those who used to work in the tourist industry can all get TSA jobs.

^That video pissed me off, Helen, but I think that agent was female. She is just kind of mannish looking probably because of the bullet-proof vest she's wearing under her uniform and her haircut is quite short.

That breast milk video is horrendous. Just want to point out that it is from February 2010 (first posted in May 2010 as several separate videos, then compiled into one recently by Armato's brother). The woman in the video is Stacey Armato, a lawyer from Los Angeles who flies from Pheonix to LA once a week. She filed a complaint with the TSA, but none of the staff in the video have been disciplined, to her knowledge. She has yet to find a lawyer to represent her in a lawsuit against the TSA (which sounds ridiculous to me, she certainly has one hell of a case!).

Though I agree with Celebrian - the person conducting the pat-down is definitely a woman.
