Ask a Judge Hey Judges- What can be done to improve Pageant Score? en>fr fr>en By prettyeyessxoxo Comments: 7, member since Fri Apr 16, 2010On Wed Dec 22, 2010 01:45 AM
So I'm 19 and I've been dancing since I was about 14. I do pageants frequently, which involves a talent showcase which is almost half of the total pageant score.
My performance anxiety is always high. Judges note low scores on my dancing technique-- I think it has alot to do with my performance anxiety. I'm wondering if I should change my talent all together.. or change to choreography that I feel more comfortable with.. any advice? 2 Replies to Hey Judges- What can be done to improve Pageant Score? |

I judge pageants, and as an ex-dancer, I know a little bit about technique, but most pageant judges don't. A lot of girls I've judged don't pick the hardest choreography because they simply don't have to. You can wow the judges with a less complex piece with less tricks in it, as long as you make sure you're executing your steps well. Most pageant judges like pieces that are light and fluffy, not gloomy. For whatever reason, contemporary pieces don't often score well in pageants, so I'd suggest sticking to something a little more popular. I hope that made some sense! |

I agree. I have started attending pageants with my granddaughter and see that most go for the wow. A split or big battement, or huge leap will get more points that a perfectly executed technical move.
Where I would hate this type of dance in competitions, they do well in pageants as judges rarely have dance training. That is not to say to forgo technique, but this is where you can get away with more tricks. Personality and showmanship will count more than anything. |
