I am trying to decide whether to wear a bun wig or full wig for next year. Of course I'm going to speak to my coach, but what are your thoughts? I love both of them, I just can't decide. I'll post pictures in the next post :)

I think you look very pretty in your bun wig. Dd has recently switched from the Anna Long to a bun wig. Her TC decides which dancers can wear buns. In order to be given permission for this, the dancer must have very good carriage and posture.

I think both of them look good but for some reason I'm leaning toward liking the full wig. Maybe i'm just leaning toward it because i love the way the curls fall, it's nice and full without being overpowering. Either way you'll look great. side note: i really like the way you did your "poof" for the bun wig

I don't know if this makes a difference, but here's a more recent picture of me with my full wig. The first photo of me in the full wig was taken August 2010 and since then I've lost a fair amount of weight - so my face is probably less rounded. Again, tell me what you think!

dancingbarista - I'm not that clever! Jitchiwah did it for me! She's the one who also put my bun wig on and in the first photo of the full wig, she did it too. Jess is the talented one, not me! Haha

I voted for the bun because I think it looks really elegant and more natural. The only thing I would change about it is that it's quite small and flat, so maybe you could put a donut under it to give it a bit more volume.

I also like the full wig because it isn't too big and overpowering and it frmaes you face nicely.

It might just be the angle of the photo but I prefer the bun wig on you. However, my golden rule for bun wigs is that they shouldn't be attempted unless your upper body is completely still. If there are any carriage issues at all, they're more noticeable in a bun.

When we first started competing, my sister bought herself a bun wig and my teacher curled my hair for me. After one feis it became clear that my hair cannot be curled, so I would wear Bec's bun wig (and this was a VERY EARLY model of bun wig; it was literally a curly haired scrunchie). After two or three feises I had to get a full wig because my teacher put a lot of turns in my slip jig and it became clear that I lead into a turn with my first shoulder - I don't keep my upper body square. I probably still do it. We had another girl transfer in who'd always worn a bun with her old teacher, and my teacher banned it because she wiggled her shoulders when she did entrechat.

It's not so much about trying to trick the judges, more that you shouldn't stand there with a big cardboard sign saying "Look at my wonky shoulders!"

So after that massive ramble, just have a look at yourself dancing in a mirror, or record yourself, and keep an eye on your shoulders. If they're moving about it's probably time to work on correcting that before you opt for the bun wig.

Thanks for everyone's input, it really helps! I was very much considering wearing the Bun Wig, but now, after reading Louise's reply, I'm having other thoughts. Currently I don't think my posture and carriage is too good, I lean forward when I jump. Still throwing around a few ideas.

Again, thank you all so much for the help- I'm going to have a chat to my coach and see what he thinks. :)

I really like the look of the bun wig. It really suits you, but so does the full wig! I would definitely speak to your teacher about it. Like Louise said, Bun wigs are fairly merciless in drawing attention to errors in posture, which can work in both ways - it can really show-off perfect posture, or show-off errors.

I can imagine that living in Australia a bun wig is probably more bearable to wear than a full wig though! :P

Claire.

I think Loise has a good point. I love bun wigs but don't have perfect posture to pull one off. Because of this i'm hoping that by the time I get closer to champs, i'll be ready for one. It's kind of a double goal of champs and bun wig :) Maybe you could wear the full wig for now and use the bun wig as a kind of incentive to improve your posture.

I like a full wig better on myself, but I think you look good in both. Louise is right about the posture, though. I used to wear a bun wig, but then started placing a lot better when I got a full wig, and that's probably why.

I love the bun wig on you - its really elegant but I think a full wig would go better with your dress and you have mentioned you have a few posture issues so stick with the full one.

Would love to see them both tried on with your dress!

Edited by SHOCKNESSY (202979) on 2011-01-18 14:36:13 A piece got cut off :/
Picture 1 full wig (I'm on the right)
Picture 2 Bun Wig

I Think I look better in a bun wig to be honest, but I haven't been wearing it for very long
And like Louise said, they're horrible for pointing put bad posture :/

I've got some serious thinking to do now! I was dead set on only wearing a full wig, when I first got it (after waiting 3.5 years!!), heck, I wore it for 12 hours when I got it! But then we got the bun wig. I love it so much, but my shoulders come forward when I jump, so that's an issue. Maybe I can switch every Feis?

How does a bun wig make posture problems more noticable?

I could be wrong, but I think it's because the full wig covers down to your shoulders and it disguises it. Whereas the bun wig shows more of your shoulders and neck. Again, I could be wrong.

But a full wig moves around a lot more, potentially drawing attention to that area of your body. I remember on another thread someone mentioned that some teams only wear bun wigs for that reason: less movement of the wig, so everything looks more uniform.

So because the full wig is moving so much around your shoulders, you can't tell that the shoulders are moving too? I guess? Seems to me like you could argue it either way though. Would love to hear more opinions/theories about this.

I prefer both but i actually think you look better in the full wig. Either way looks great on you, but the full wig suits you a little better maybe because of your face shape :). I cant wear a full wig cuz i have a really long and narrow face. Yours is more ovally ( if thats even a word :P) and you could really go with either of them :D

I think you look better in a full wig, but they both look pretty! :) And Shocknessy, I really like the bun wig on you, but like I just said, they're both really pretty! :)

I think the bun wig looks the best, but go with your teachers advice.

I think both look great, but if I were you I'd be getting some more volume in your poof for whichever wig you do use. I have a similar shape face to you and I find that I need that extra height and volume in my poof to frame my face a bit more. (Picture to show kind of "before" and "after")
