Hi from the Highland and Ballet boards!
I thought that this would be the best place to ask this since the choreographers are gymnasts... I am in a musical and I have to learn to do an illusion. Yay! Fun! And I get the general jyst of it (its the easier kind... I've looked on YouTube and thought I'd clarify that I'm allowed to have one hand on the ground just in case) but I'm doing terribly in the way of actually doing them, and it's extremely frustrating that I can do triple pirouettes, grande jetes and pointe work but I can't do this illusion thing... general help and advice would be appreciated... please?

This would do well on the twirling boards. But since I happened to pop over I can help you out a bit. :)

Step 1: Start by facing the front. Swing your arms down and around coming up to the left. As they come over your head, step onto your right foot, turning your hips square to the right. Kick your left leg behind you, so that your back is now flat and on the same level as your leg.

Step 2: Start turning on your supporting foot, as you reach down to the ground (you can use your hands to help turn you). You should now be facing the back. Your left leg should be up at 180 degrees and your nose should be touching your knee. If you are having trouble getting your leg that high, think of keeping a straight back while bringing your nose to your knee.

Step 3: Continue walking your hands around and turning on your supporting foot until your hips are facing the left side of the room. Lower your leg, back to a 90 degree angle and lift your back to the same angle as your leg. This is the same position as your first stepped into on step 1, just facing the opposite way.

Step 4: Bring your body up and leg down while turning to face the front. And Tah Dah! You have an illusion.

You will want to practice to get smoother and faster at illusions. The process is the same regardless of what direction you go or supporting foot you use. As you progress, you will want to start reaching with only one hand to the floor and you will smooth out the stops on step 1 and 3. So you start facing the front, turn and kick the leg, reach to the floor with one hand behind your foot to help turn you (so really it's the toe), then stand back up.

Once you have then, you will not touch the floor with your hands at all. Happy Practicing!
