The Break-Up Poem

You
are
a closetful of things I can't throw away,
a hundred words I can't unsay,
a million heartbeats you'll never hear;
you're all this to me, and more,
my dear.

Here
are
all the pictures we'll never take,
and all the friends we would have made,
the Christmas cards we'll never send,
the pants I'll never need to hem,
the passports agents never stamped,
the song I picked for our first dance,
the ticket stubs that were never ripped,
and a dozen roses,
         never picked.

Broken is the white picket fence
for it's a story that was never meant
to be more than all these rhyming words,
and even these should remain unheard.

And
yet
like the child's eyes that will never open
or a golden locket with chain unbroken,
my heart is whole, the story sound,
so to my closet these ghosts are bound.

        So into the box
        and shut the lid:
                                Here's to the life
                                I would have lived.

I really like this. I've never experienced a break-up before but I felt the emotion from this, and... I don't know, I just like this quite a bit. Great job, Heart!

Brilliant. I really liked this poem, I could feel the emotion. It brought back some heartache for me, but in a good way. Beautiful!

I'm experiencing a break-up right now and it's exaclty how I feel. I like it. May come back to re-read it a couple of times so I can get rid of those tears haha
