Hi everyone!

So for my sorority at school, we have a dance off with our brother fraternity every year. Being one of the only actual dancers my sorority nominated me to choreograph a dance to the song "Zero to Hero" from the movie "Hercules". The issue is that 1) I am a BALLET dancer, and have only a little bit of experience with show-choir like choreography YEARS ago, so I don't know where to start with jazzy, modern and easy choreography! 2) Most of the people participating won't actually be dancers, so I need things that are easy to learn, look showy and are just plain fun. :)

I am willing to hear anything at this point! Our chapter is desperate - all the guys have their stuff picked out and rehearsed! We've got about a month until the dance off!

Thanks for your help!

You need to think SHAPES not technique. Formations are a big deal and can spice up easy, simple, (and even better, clean) choreography. Keep the movements rather natural to the pedestrian, which means less turn-out and more turn-in, less kick your ear and more kick to hip-height. Are you guys going to be singing? If so, you need to factor that in and allow for breath. If not, it's still good to keep in the style of singing (performing from the internal, the story/character being within) rather than a tendency in dance for the story/character to be external.

Stepping Steps (think jazz squares, Y steps, pas de bourees, walks, chugs)
Jumping Steps (think ponies, Out-Cross-Unwind, "Jump on it" circles)
Dramatic arms (think high Vs, Low V's, Diagonals, K's)

Don't be afraid of shoulders/hips/poses. Because it's a powerful and girly song, don't be afraid of girly/flirtatious movement. It's a brilliant song and you can do a lot with it. Do you have any other specific questions?

Thanks so much AlwaysonStage! We performed it last night at our chapter's formal and it went over very smoothly! I will post a video when I get the chance!

I did use a lot of formations, hip and arm motions. It looked great, despite the fact that I screwed up the two pirouettes I was supposed to do. The girls who danced with me were wonderful and learned the dance quickly, which was great.

Thanks so much for your advice!
