I just wanted to show everyone the 'Crazy Quilt' that I had made from my scraps of tartan and velvet. It was hard to take a picture of it to show the detail in the hand-embroidered stitches, so I took a second picture of a few blocks up close.

It is absolutely stunning! I already have another box of scraps ready to go for the next one....my daughter fell in love with it instantly!

What a beautiful heirloom!

Absolutely beautiful and a lovley record of your work. I am sure you will remember which piece of tartan was made for which dancer too! Just out of interest, what size is it?

Thank you everyone...I keep looking at it with amazement, I am absolutely thrilled with the result!

kathr - you're right, I can name each dancer that wears each piece of tartan that I kept from their kilt. Some of you on DDN may recognize your daughter's tartan from their outfit.

The finished measurements are only about 63"x63" - just lap size. I'm afraid to use it though...my luck, the dog will chew a hole in it, so I've bought a quilt rack to display it lovingly in my living room!

Lovely reminder of all your hard work. I have loads of tartan scraps too and have used them in various projects over the years. The one item that is in constant use is my patchwork tartan pincushion!

Amazing quilt. Here's a thought... make a note or letter about the quilt when it was made your name stories about it etc. So that in the distant future people will know where it came from and what it means. Quilts are a lovely way to tell a story to the future.

warmest regards,
K.

I wish I could claim that I made it, but I didn't. I don't want to take credit for it - I should have made it more clear in the original post. I had it made by one of my staff members at the fabric store...I just supplied all the scraps, she did everything else! I'm no quilter, and don't have the time to take on such a project with all of the costumes as well. Besides, I don't have the patience to be a quilter...not to mention all of the embroidery work she added!

I think I will be adding it to my website as a 'special order' item - each and every one would be different depending on the tartan selection in my box at the time - and can also be done without the embroidered detail.

It actually didn't take her that long to do...she started it in December, working on it slowly (as there was no rush), but has also made another 6 quilts (not this type) since then as well. If she were just working on this one, it would have been done in no time (well, at least less time than you'd think!). My fault, the other 6 quilts she made were for displays for the store...so that took her time away from this one.

I will be adding this item to my website in the next couple of days - options in size will be available as well. Wall quilt, lap quilt (60"x60"), or a bit larger (70"x70")...with or without the embroidery. She is pretty excited about it, as she really enjoyed putting this one together.

...and I can tell you, it is very warm to cozy under! I'm sitting here with my laptop typing this, and have the quilt on my lap...toasty!

I agree with those that mentioned it being a great gift for those well deserving dance teachers out there...not to mention those tartan loving Scots who can't get enough plaid!

Very nice. I use to have one but as you say the doggies got chewing their bones on it and pretty soon it got holes... It would look gorgeous on the wall at the head of the bed.
I have been wanting to do one with left over sock yarn as I have bags and bags of that...so maybe this will inspire me to get at it.

I'm curious - it looks like you did the binding in velvet. Did you back the quilt with velvet as well or a different material? It really is lovely!

Sock4u -- exactly why I don't want to leave it out on the couch as a throw...little Farley (dog) will make it his new home guaranteed! Got the quick rack today for it...just have to assemble it, it will look lovely draped over it!

half_point -- yes, it is backed in black cotton velvet - I thought about other fabrics, but they seemed to 'cheapen' the look. After all the work the Linda (who made the quilt) put in to it, I didn't want it losing it's richness by using cotton or something on the back/binding.

Absolutely love it - would have it as a wall hanging though. As a teacher, and a dancer, I would love having for myself!
